I spotted a baby koi yesterday

Yep, count them. One baby koi. Very tiny, no more than an inch long and pencil thin. Little yellow fellow. I didn't see anymore. I don't hold out much hope for him if he's the only one. The old safety in numbers thing when you have dragonfly larve and crayfish to worry about when you're that little. I guess time will tell.

Oh that's exciting clm, could you not seperate the baby from the rest???
I remember having Tetra-babies seperated in a net in the aqarium I had.
But of course yours is a large pond,a little different

Can he hide under rocks or whatnot until he gets a little larger. I know he CAN but WILL he? Survival of the fattest? Or fastest in this case.

Oh there's lots of hiding places for him. He doesn't have to worry about the other fish eating him, apparently they don't eat fry, just eggs. It's the dragonfly larve and crayfish he has to worry about. I tried to look for him when I got home, but they're hard to spot unless the sun is on the pond in the right direction, and of course we had nothing but big black thunderclouds overhead when I got home. I'll be looking for him tomorrow though.

No sign of Nemo tonight, but I didn't see my 2 baby butterflies, who were a whole lot bigger than this little fellow, for a month after I put them in the pond, so I'll just have to keep looking and see if I spot him and any more.

Here's a pic of the 2 butterflies (Betty and Veronica) who were 2-3 inches when I put them in the pond 2 months ago, they're now 6 - 8 inches long at least now. The white one is going to be a big fish. They both wolf down the groceries pretty good too.

So beautiful! I love watching fish grabbing their food. Koi food is a little expensive too, isn't it?

Depends on the food you buy. Now I figure that since these guys only get to eat max 6 months of the year in this climate, then they should get fed a high quality diet, and the whole pet food scare thing a while back made me pay a lot closer attention to the koi food too, so no products with gluten for my guys either. They get a mixture of 3 types of pellets and freeze dried shrimp and meal worms. The koi food usually runs me between $80 - $130 per 2.5 - 5k bag. Koi are supposed to enjoy fruit and veggies too, but I've never had luck with that. May try some watermelon and grapefruit on these guys this weekend and see if they like it. All the plant material in the pond and the algae gives them their fix of greens when they want them. At least the algae is free.

Talking About Your Koi??

Hello and good morning Cindy,
Can you please tell me a little more about your pond and the baby koi you found in June? I am interested because I have two 3-4" koi that I am looking for a home for.

Sharstevie, the pond is approximately 4,000 gallons. I had lost all my previous koi last winter, I had to shut the pumps down because of a leak and didn't have large enough air holes in to gas off the pond, so totally my fault.
This pond has been up and running for 3 years now. Previously I had a smaller, approximately 1500 gallon pond and before that one that was around 500 gallons.

I bought 7 new koi this past April so I wasn't expecting baby koi this year. The only female I have (or know I have) at the moment has spawned numerous times since spring. I prefer not to keep more than 10 koi in this pond. They get very large and need a minimum of 250 gallons per koi, preferred stocking level is 500 gallons per koi. So I can keep 3 of these babies, but I too will have to rehome a bunch next spring.

I have at the moment 3 large babies, approximatley 3-4" now, and another 2 smaller, 2-3" and at least another 5 or 6 at 1-2". More I haven't seen yet I'm sure.

A few pics of the pond and koi attached. The first two are from last year, the last is this year after DH replaced the stone walls with cedar.

As for rehoming your koi, it's easier to rehome in the spring. If you contact a local dealer, they may take them, or you could try a local pond club and see if there are members who would like them.
