Bluetick Coonhound

Hi, This is my first time ever asking an opinion online and blogging, if this is what I'm doing. I rescued a 5 month old bluetick coonhound. The cutest thing on earth. He listens and to me he seems to train pretty good. I've had him for about a month and he can sit, stay, lay down. We are working on jumping. I've also been trying to walk with him on a leash. He doesn't really pull me down the street. But he is walking with his nose completely on the ground. He just wants to track. Which I know is what he knows. How do I get him to just walk with his head held high. I'm thinking of starting some training class with him. But, what I know, is that no matter what I learn, consistency is the key to training them. So I thought I'd give it a try. I just love Jake. I know we have alot of work ahead of us. Anyone have any idea on how to get the nose off the ground.

No advice...but with luck someone else will have some for you.

I'm just here to say "welcome to the board" and beg for some pics of Jake. I love hounds!

When I was a kid I had a beagle and he would do the same thing, nose to the ground and do oblivious using a halti did nothing he would just run and pull sideways. The only time I got him to walk properly was using a normal leash with the collar on the top of the neck with little slack given kind of "dog whisperer style" I suppose )though he never existed at that time and I already knew it worked, even thought I was like 12). If you do not allow him to do the sniffing on the normal walk you will need to allow him sniffing time as it is ingrained behaviour, you might want to consider finding a good field or open area and have him on a long rope if you are in the city or an enclosed area.

He is being true to his breed however I would use a haltie as I have had success with this. You are able to control the head and therefore the body as well.
