Update on my sick pup
Well, after $600 + in testing, they have found out she has Camphiobacter (sp). They put her on an antibiotic that made her throw up, which right after that her rectum prolapsed. She has lost the weight that I had put back on her, she is back down to 38 pounds (healthy lean weight was 55 pounds) We have cut the dose in half and giving her anti-vomit meds. Today she seems to be feeling fine, other than the runs. Please keep my lil girl in your thoughts. Thanks

We've had run-ins with campylobactor, too, 3feathers. It can be pretty tough. What antibiotic is she on?
Sending and s for your girl!

Thank you everyone. She is on Erthryomycin. At first it was 400mg 3 times a day, but now the vet wants to half that amount since it was making her so sick.

Our dogs don't tolerate Erythromicin well, either. Have you tried putting her on a probiotic? That might help with the diarrhea. Also, a little pumpkin in her meals (plain 100% pumpkin, no sugar or spices added) might help. Maybe a TBSP.
I hope she's better soon, 3feathers!

Did you keep them on that, or did the vet put them on a different antibiotic that worked well?? I am using ProZyme, when I can actually get her to eat. And have also tried pumpkin and slippery elm. The poor thing is wasting away to nothing.

How is she doing today? Any better? Make sure she stays hydrated--our worst problem with campyllobacter was dehydration. A number of our dogs ended up having to go in for fluids to rehydrate.
Is ProZyme an enzymatic supplement? See if you can find a probiotic instead--acidopholous. Clear it with your vet, though, first, to make sure that it won't interfere with anything she's taking. The probiotic should help to regulate the beneficial bacteria in her gut. If the vet thinks it might be too strong for her given her condition, ask about adding a little plain yogurt (active cultures and no artificial sweeteners). Yogurt is a very mild probiotic that might also help your girl! This summer, our dogs had to take doxycycline and amoxicillin back-to-back over anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks (depending on the dog) and, thanks to the probiotic, they all made it through without any adverse side effects (like diarrhea).

She is okay. She is acting like she is feeling better, and slowly getting her appetite back. But she is still having the bloody loose stool, and she is still straining several times after her initial BM (which all that comes out is blood each time). She has not had a problem with dehydration. I have given her plain yogurt a few times a week, as I do with all my dogs. Do you recommend a certain brand of probitic? Thanks for all of your help.

Actually, we went to Wal*Mart and picked the cheaper of the two brands of acidopholous that they had. It worked great, so we didn't have to experiment much. Our 50 lb dogs get about a half capsule per day--we just sprinkle it on their food.

It's terrible when our pups are sick and we can do so little to help. When our dogs have the runs, we give them FortiFlora. It's a probiotic that's made for canines. You have to get if from your vet. It's a little expensive but it works great, it usually only takes one dose before we see improvements.
Hope your pupper's feeling better soon! |

The official vet visit was today. She has not lost anymore weight, but has not gained any. She still has runny poo with a lot of blood. The vet said he was expecting to see an improvement, at least some. He is at a loss. He told me there are two options, which is up to me. #1 Put her on predisone, and it may clear it right up, or make her go downhill fast if there is an infection. #2 Refer me to a specialist to have a scope and biopsy done. I am so upset! I have always been one to try to do as much as I can, but I really don't know if I can afford the specialist  Please keep us in your thoughts. I am so drained.

Glad to hear that she had a good poop.
Have you tried giving her satin balls for weight gain? You can do a search here for some recipes (there is a few different ones) or google for it and you'll get a kajillion hits. Good luck and keep us posted. |
