Jack Russell/Shih Tzu Cross

Hi everyone, I am new to the site, if I have posted in the wrong place, I do apologize, please bear with me!

We are looking at adopting a Jack Russell Terrier/Shih Tzu cross. She is 2 years old. Apparently house trained, kennel trained, great with kids, spayed, etc. I am looking for feedback on this type of breed. We are first time dog owners. We do have a fenced yard, but are also not home at all during the day for approx 3 days a week. We have a 3 year old girl, who is likely going to be our only child, so we are looking for a buddy for her, a dog that she can take under her wing and truely call her own. One that will love her to pieces and also protect her. One that will even sleep at the foot of her bed. We have nothing but love to give a dog.

Is this a good breed for children/families?

I appreciate all input! Thanks so much!

As this is a cross between two very different breeds - it is next to impossible to try to predict anything about the temperment of this particular dog without meeting it and seeing how it behaves in different situations.

If this dog is being offered through a reputable rescue group - the foster family should be able to answer all of your questions.

I will say that - as a general rule - smaller dogs are not always great with smaller children.

Do the Jack Russells typically need a lot of exercise?

Jacks need tons of exercise but shih tzu's are pretty lazy so it really will come down to the actual temperament and energy level of the do you are looking at.
You may want to speak to a few local rescues, and explain your situation and what you are looking for and see if they can recommend a dog for you. When you have a child involved it should really come down to the temperament of the dog and its suitability for your situation rather then going by looks/breed which should be the last consideration.

Shih Tzu's are bred strictly for companion animals. They may bark their faces off at intruders, but open the door and 99 % of the time, they think that the intruders are their long lost friends.

Backyard breeder. People who breed for the wrong reasons , usually to make a quick $$ while sitting on their a**.

Maybe you did not adopt from the BYB but the people who gave you this dog defenetly got it from a BYB. No good breeders would mix breeds.

I dont understand the relevance of this, sorry, I am new to the dog world. We did not want a pure bred due to the cost of getting one, we could not and would not spend $500+ for a dog.

Who knows where this dog came from. Maybe the neighbour bred their dog with the other neighbour. All we wanted was to give a dog a loving home, which we have done. I am thinking of all the people in my life that currently have a dog...not one of them is a pure bred.

I truely believe that not all mixed dogs are bred for the wrong reasons.

That's just my 2 cents.

Hello and welcome to you and your new furry!

Hopefully all is well with your new addition and pictures would be much appreciated! An 11 month old puppy is always a handful!

You are right - it isn't relevant. You have a new puppy that you rescued and you are quite pleased with it.

There are millions of dogs put to sleep in North America every year for no reason beyond the fact that they have no home. Yes - all mixed breed dogs are bred for the wrong reason. But then, well more then half of purebred dogs are bred for the wrong reason, also.

Please - you are new to the dog world - look around and read. There really is a ton to learn and friendly people willing to help.

There is no relevance, for bringing it up.

Enjoy your new puppy, and if you have any questions - we are a helpful bunch here..
