my dear old dog is showing neurological issues
Hi there:
I am quite concerned about my dog. I have a vet appointment booked in two days, but wanted to come here and see if anyone had any insight on my dogs behaviour changes. My dog turned 12 this summer, exact birthdate not known as she was a rescue dog. She is a mixture of beagle, black lab and border collie. She has always been healthy but was diagnosed with a mild heart murmer as a pup whenwe adopted her. A few days ago we noticed that she really hugs the right side of the wall when she walks around the house. She leans to the right when she stands up, or crouches to pee. She also suddenly stopped barking - something that suddenly hit us yesterday when she did not bark and "talk" when her favourite people in the world (my inlaws) came for a visit. She did look up and wag her tail and walk over later to be petted, but her normal enthusiastic greeting was completely missing. :-( She is still eating and drinking, she has rare incontinence in the house, still signals to go outside, still wags her tail and is affectionate, still seems to hear us and obeys commands like lay down. Her eyes are very cloudy but that has not limited her before these past few days. Lastly, she has occasional violent episodes of sneezing - where she sneezes so hard she hits her head on the floor. They occur sporadically and are isolated instances, not a regular occurance. My questions are - any ideas what could be causing these symptoms? can we continue like this for awhile if she is not exhibiting discomfort and is still eating or is it in her best interest to euthanize her now? I can't bear the thought of making this decision but don't want to be selfish either. :-( We are so sad to think or our dear old dog leaving our side. She has been a constant and faithful companion these past 12 year. :-( Thanks in advance for any info or advice. Irene Last edited by Irene2008; October 19th, 2008 at 08:22 PM. Reason: elaboration |

Hard to tell--could be something like vestibular disease, or maybe a mild stroke. The vet should be able to give you more information.
for good results at the vet! Please keep us posted on your sweet girl's progress.

I agree with Hazel's thoughts and don't have any more advice to offer but just wanted to send some good wishes for the vet visit. I hope it's something fairly simple like an inner ear problem.
Good luck and keep us posted. |
