Old dog and teeth cleaning

I've got an appointment to have our 14 year old border collie/labs teeth cleaned, and possibly some extractions. I am really worried about putting her under because of her age, even though she is in pretty good shape. She had them cleaned and two extractions in 2010 and came out of the anesthesia very well, but she was a lot younger then. I think shes having teeth problems, otherwise I wouldn't even put her through it .We're having the pre blood work done, and I'm wondering why they do it. Is it done before they put her under, and if something shows up will they cancel the cleaning?

Sometimes they do it to see how the anesthetic will affect them.

Anaesthetic is much safer for all ages of all beings these days. I know you will worry anyway but the pre bloodwork will help to establish her general health and they won't go ahead if all indicators are not go. She will be fine. If her teeth are hurting or infected that in itself can impair her health, as you know.

She has a habit now of licking her lips quite a bit, I'm assuming something is wrong in her mouth. I know she has to go, but shes deaf and I know she'll be afraid, plus I hate the thought of putting her under. I know I have no choice, but I worry for her.

Of course you're going to worry, because you love her. But that's why you are doing it right. We all worry about our fur babies, even when they're younger! Please let us know how it goes.

Shes got a strong heart (according to the vet) probably from years of constant running (border collie) I hoped the last time she had it done in 2010 it would have been the last time necessary, she was a lot younger then.

Lexie had her teeth cleaned today, shes in pretty rough shape right now. She had three teeth pulled, but one is really giving her a problem. It had a cavity that dissolved the tooth to the gum line, and the vet couldn't get the roots out because they were so deep in the bone she was afraid she would break her jaw. She had never seen roots so deep. She sutured the gum over the roots and is hoping it will heal painfree, but I don't think shes too confident. I can only hope. On the good side Lexies blood tests came back perfect and her heart was really strong under anesthesia. We brought her home too early after anesthesia, so shes pretty out of it, even peeing on herself, but at least I can keep and eye on her here, if she stayed overnight there would have been no one there to watch her.
