Not a pet, but so sad...
Today the forecast was 'sunny', but two hours later it turned into dark clouds and thunder. I was rushing home from work, and was worried about my babies outside. I wasn't paying attention and so when I finally did see the little gopher trying to make it across the highway, I braked too late. I hit the little guy right across the hindquarters... I was sobbing as I could see him trying to get the rest of the way... then the person behind me gave him sweet mercy.
I cried all the way home and all the way back to work, and most of the morning actually. Everyone said that I was over-reacting... but I LOVE those little gophers. I see them every morning on my way to work, peeking their little cute heads out of the tall grass, or making little gopher-loafs on the side of the road, lounging in the sun... They always make my day and bring a smile to my face so naturally I was devastated. I have decided that my gopher was Romeo in a past life and he was trying to be reincarnated to be with Juliet... Peace little gopher... Last edited by kittycorner; July 24th, 2006 at 08:26 PM. Reason: spelling! |

and i thought i was the only one who felt sad seeing those poor little critters by the side of the highway.. gophers, racoons, porcupines... it really breaks my heart. specially knowing many of these were going home to feed their little ones. knock on wood, i've never had the misfortune to hit an animal while driving a car (or anything else) and i won't even go fishing... the last day of our vacation 2 weeks ago, we left the cottage and just before turning on the main road, right on the corner of the driveway, lay this huge, most beautiful jet black porcupine i had ever seen. he looked like he was sleeping on his side, but he was cold and silent... his big slipper-like feet tucked up, his eyes closed, his quills glistening in the hot sun. hubby and i got out of the car to touch him and wish him godspeed, we both were horribly sad at such a fate. thanks for sharing that with us, it's good to pause once in a while for all creatures.

Kittycorner, you are not alone,a month ago it was bunnies, now it seems to be baby-coons:sad: on the side of the road. All we can hope for is a quick death for these unfortunate little guys...
I too have been brought to tears many times,as of now,I've never hit anything, but I don't do much night-driving,when I believe most of these accidents happen.

Mighty sad, that some people have no feelings for all creatures. No matter if they are wild or domestic. Just like the little squirrels running across the street to run and play, or just go home and feed the family. Yes, they can be little devils, but can't we all. We have a family of 4 in our evergreen. Every year they seem to get bigger in numbers. But i wouldn't give them up. they are so cute.
the other day when Buddy and I were outside, we heard this screech and thug, some kid in a souped up car, racing down our residential street, stepped on the brakes, and skidded, hit a tree, and while this was going on, killed a squirell. Who knows what happened, other than the squirell died. My 2 cents worth. |

Awww, it is sad  I've yet to hit anything, and hope I never do, but chances are, I will.
A few years ago, I was in a van and we were driving from Calgary to Winnipeg for a race, and the driver hit a flock of birds. When we looked out the rear window, we saw the four birds, streams of blood, and three decapitated heads. all of the passengers (all 18 and under) were freaking out. We were carrying boats on top of the van, and when we stopped and looked at the boats, one of them was covered in blood and had feathers stuck in the ties. In all honesty though, the farmers are probably happy you hit the lil guy. I remember from my summers on the farm that they are a pita, and we had animals (and some people had guns) to kill them off. |
