Help with hurt pigeon!
I found a pigeon downtown today (December 3rd) that is missing a large amount of flesh from the back of his neck towards the top of his head, slightly bigger than a two dollar coin. I applied Polysporin to his wound and he seems to be in well enough shape, as he seems coherent and able to walk and preen, although he has not eaten or drank any water that I have seen. I am worried because as I stated, it is a rather deep wound so I am not sure if he will be able to fully heal. I cannot take him to any shelters in my area, as all of them have already admitted they will euthanize him, although they have yet to see his condition. I have not been able to locate any pigeon or wild bird recovery centres in my area (Hamilton, Ontario) unless they are a bird of prey.
Does anyone know where I can take him? Or what else I can do to help him heal? Any suggestions would be great.. Last edited by skorpio; December 4th, 2008 at 12:45 AM. |

Thank you so much for giving this bird a second chance. I've noticed that in the wild, pigeons which are sick or injured are quickly finished off by the others .
Try this forum, people there have been really helpful to me in the past. http://www.pigeons.biz/pigeons/index.html Don't get your hopes up; birds are extremely fragile. That being said, I have saved a few with terrible injuries. There's a wonderful bird rescue here in Quebec which treats pigeons with loving respect. I doubt if the humane society there has the expertise, even if they agreed to take it. Good luck! Please keep us posted. PS Give him something to perch on. The last fellow I had I kept in a big cat crate and I put a stick through the slots on each side for him to sit on. Last edited by badger; December 4th, 2008 at 02:27 AM. |

Skorpio,thank's for caring
I have a flock of about 30 Pigeons coming to my feeders and I love them. If I find a wounded bird,I take it to our Humane Society(Oakville)they have an outdoor large cage for birds. Often times though,I am sure they euthanize if the wound is too severe. They are fragile, but it is possible he can survive,he could be in shock right now. You can get some Pigeon-feed,I saw it at WalMart the other day, although "my"Pigeons eat good birdseeds and corn. If you cannot find any place to take him, could you keep him warm and fed in a carrier. It's possible he was attacked by a Hawk and something scared the Hawk away,I have Hawks going after the Pigeons here every day in the winter. for the Birdie

If you live near Ottawa, there is a wild bird sanctuary that would take him:
http://www.wildbirdcarecentre.org/index.htm sorry, just saw you're in Hamilton...but maybe if you called this centre they could direct you to someone closer to home?

sometimes the bird sanctuary in ottawa will supply transportation. I'd say your pidgeon is in a bit of shock, keep him in a very very warm place, dry getting some water or pedialyte into him with a dropper, just touch his beak with it and he should open for you

Today's Update!
Thank-you for writing back to me!
I have been keeping him warm in my bathroom (warmest place in the apartment) and I have been consistently cleaning up after him, because he was throwing up all night.. I have also gently been keeping his wound clean and applying more Polysporin. It looks so much better today! And he is so much more active.. I do believe he was in some state of shock, and I also agree that it was most likely a larger bird trying to feed on him.. It would explain his loss of feathers and where he was injured, etcetera. Today I am going to find something to make into a perch, and also I will stop at my local Walmart to see what seed they have available (I had fed him what unsalted grain & seed crackers I had around). I saw him drinking a nice amount of water and attempting to eat the crackers & seeds, so that's a good sign! I will definitely still call as many places as I can to ask information and whether they will take him in.. I also have someone coming over tonight who knows a lot about taking care of injured animals. I will let you all know more as it happens.. |

skorpio, sounds good,he might very well make a full recovery
When a bird cannot fly, there are not many options, but a wound can heal and I hope it will. I've had Squirrels losing a leg, losing a tail, many one-legged birds, they are amazingly resilient. I am certain, when and if his wound heals and he can fly,you can let him go and he'll be fine. Thank's for caring about this bird, most people think Pigeons are a pest, but not to me,I love all birds. Please keep us posted. Here are a few of "my"Pigeons..
