Joeys at the doggie dentist

Joey went to the doggie dentist today. Hopefully he will have most of his teeth left when I pick him up. Poor little guy - he was really good when I took him in. Last night we was very wimpery all night like he new something was going on. Pets are very intuitive.

Poor little baby. I'm sure he will be fine. Give him a big hug from me when he comes home.

Joey lost a lot of teeth 12 to be exact - he is just resting in his bed right now. He looks really sad.

Depending on the breed (some breeds get worse plaque than others), the diet (cheap food = expensive teeth) and the care the teeth received before Joey's Mom got him (he's six, going on 7), the plaque and tartar can build up quickly and cause gingivitis among other things. Dogs don't get fillings like humans- when the cavity gets really bad, the tooth gets yanked.

They can't tell how many need to be yanked till they do a thorough cleaning of the teeth to see which ones are rotten enough to be trouble later on if not pulled.

Usually a vet will do yearly cleanings on dogs who are prone to plaque buildup.

Well Joey must have had lots of sugary candy before we got him - he was on eukanuba but now is on Solid Gold and does get his teeth brushed - Unfortuntaely most of the damage already happened befpre we gpt him could be genetics, could be poor food - but I am not worried about that anymore - he now gets good food - his teeth get brushed so I am doing all I can to be sure his remaining teeth stay in good shape.

Anyways he is still recovering. He was sent home with pain killers and soft food too.

He is okay - last night he was pretty disorientated I took him out to go to the bathroom and he just didnt want to go out - a few minutes later he pooped on our kitchen floor - no big deal Joeys just a bit under the whether. He has to have soft food for three days too - hope its no problems switching him back to Solid Gold.

He eats the soft food really funny- he will fill up his mouth with and then go and hide eat that mouth full, then come back and do it again.

Also he gets antibiotics two viles that I am supposed to squirt in his mouth - he did not like that - instead I squirted it on a piece of my kids lunch meat. He is also getting anitbiotic pills for the next ten days - one pill we lost I cannot find it - went under the fridge - the next I hid in the other piece of meat, Joey ate the meat then promptly spit out the pill, I was able to put the pill to the back of Joeys throat and I did hear him swallow it. Joey hated that.

So now I just crushed the pill put it right in his food - giving doggies medicine is so much fun.

Once his mouth is healed up I will take some pics the before pics are in this thread here

http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=24620

they are actually worse than the actual pictures I took - the black was really bad in the back teeth - you could hardly even see the teeth.

Awww, I'm sure his mouth and gums are still sore and swollen. And with him eating funny, it could be a little embarassment and alot of no teeth where they once were, and that will take a little getting used to. I'll be thinking of him...sending happy thoughts!!

Poor Joey. His mouth must feel weird. He'll recover though. My dad's doggy lost a lot of teeth and he still eats bones and stuff...
