Cones - Elizabethan collars

Initially I was going to post pictures of a post-op Kaia with her cone on just to make fun of her. I didn't think she would mind.

But the more I saw her in her cone, the more I felt bad for her. She is a little munchkin, her legs, body and neck are shorter and smaller than your average cat. The vet gave us the smallest cone available to use for her so she keeps her stitches in.



We got home and put the cone on her and she couldn't walk. Because of how short she is the cone would hit the floor and she would practically flip into a headstand.




She couldn't function with this cone (walking, sleeping or eating) so for the last 24 hours she has had nothing on her head and full access to her belly and stitches.

She pulled a stitch out during this time. I then realized I had to do something.

First we tried her brother Blake's sweater.



This was too big for her and every time she tried to walk her little back legs would end up in the sweater.

Finally I thought of something.

I took an empty container (in this case a sour cream container), cut the bottom out of it, cut it down one side and put it around her neck. It is flush with her body so she can function, sleep, eat, etc. When I found the right size for her neck I used packing tape to secure it shut and make the edges smooth. I can slide it right on and off of her but she can't get it off like she can pull a cone off. And she can't bend her neck enough to access her stitched belly.



I just wanted to share this easy alternative that is more comfortable for a pet if you ever have to struggle with a nasty collar after surgery.

You're a great mom! I love that idea; I'll keep it in mind.

When my last Rottie was neutered, he wouldn't leave the stitches alone & was creating some nasty sores. So I did get one of those collars from the vet - he's a big dog and almost couldn't get through doorways with the cone on, poor guy. He was pretty grumpy.
Since then I read of an idea similar to yours, for dogs - it's a big donut type collar so they can't turn their heads, but it allows them to drink, eat, & get through doors!

Kaia is very cute indeed. Lucky kitty!

i have seen people use a plastic bucket for big dogs similar to the butter container, i tried to make one out of thick cardboard but it bent and was useless....

what could I possibly use for this dog if he should need it ever again?

he'd been bitten by a dog @ the park... this was taken @ 8months when his puppiness wasn't accepted by the older crowd... and one decided to express his disgust for it...

this is the only pic I could take of him with the cone... I felt it'd be cruel if I took any more, he couldn't walk though doors properly bc he was always walking by me & the cone stopped him @ the doorframes...

I was telling someone once b4 to use a little veritan cream, it works wonders they hate the taste of it

though I can't believe that could work at ALL times.... sometimes there needs to be an alternative, such as a collar like the margarine container..

That was me LUba!!! The veriton cream worked wonders!! The cone on poor Brick was completely humiliating for the poor guy!! I couldn't even bear to take ONE picture I felt so bad for him!! I guess its a good thing he chewed the **** out of it!!! heheheheh Smart dog!!!!

I used a yogurt container when my cat was neutered too, similar model to yours! The vet only had XL cones....5 times the size of my poor little kitty!!! Dumb ass Vet!!! (foul mouth tonite...sorry!!!)

My dog recently had a cone on....... Poor thing hated it. It was the most depressed time I had ever seen him, but after about 3 days he did a 180 and was back to normal. I think it just took some time for him to get used to it.

E collars are a pain. I found putting a little bit of roll on underarm deodorant around (not on) the suture area workings great too. Nasty tasting stuff.
