I spent yesterday evening taking porcupine quills out of my dog's mouth. I thought I had them all, but today I've noticed one more. It doesn't seem to be causing the dog any problems, but where it is located, I can't seem to get at it. Will it hurt the dog to leave it? Is there any way of calming the dog down enough (including over the counter medications) that I can get her to hold her mouth open so that I can get the final quill?

quills

hi mlt,

I'm no vet but when you leave foreign matter in a human's mouth or a dog's mouth you run the risk of infection....and/or the object may rip or tear at the flesh if it moves.

I'd say you must remove it. Try when the dog is sleepy or groggy. Find a good tweezers... and remove.

then keep an eye on the area for a few days...to make sure it's not getting infected.

If you can't do it...take her to the vet.

good luck

philboy

Thanks Philboy.

I did finally manage to get the last quill out. I had to lie down, holding her head against the ground. Then when she panted, someone else reached in and grabbed the quill with some pliers.

I'm sure she's glad it's over. I sure am.
