Is This Ringworm?
I posted earlier on another thread but I didn't get a reply. Anyway, I noticed this morning that my kitty has bald spots around her whiskers. It looks like it has a bit of blood too, like a scratch. At first I thought my other cat took a swipe at her but then I noticed the other side was even more noticeably balder.
She always grooms on doors or furniture corners so I wonder if this is a result of too much grooming or if she grooms excessively because she's itchy. I put some polysporin earlier. She definitely didn't have this bald spot on her yesterday. It doesn't seem to be getting worse either. Any ideas? |

Ringworm would not typically show up around the whiskers like that. However, it is always something to consider when you see a bald spot. Does your cat go outside ? If you try and pull the hair around that spot, does it come off easily ?

I did let my cats out in the backyard but only during warmer weather. They haven't been out in quite a while.
I just tried to tug at the hair and yes, it does come off easily. |

Could be. While I personally have not seen any cases of ringworm show up around the whiskers ( i tend to see them show up above the eyes), the face is supposedly the most common place for ringworm to show (with the next most common being the feet). I would definitely get your cat into the vet for a culture as soon as possible. Good luck!

I would take your kitty to the vet for an official diagnosis. If you have a black light at home...a true flourecent one, I don't think a bulb will work, you can turn the lights off and shine the black light over the spot..if there are green spots glowing it is most likely ring worm, which is very contagious..so you will have to watch your other pets..as well as your self. I had ringworm once from a cute little kitten that was at our vet clinic..all of us who worked there got it, and one of my pets ended up with it too. with cream, it will go away...but it took a while. ring worm usually looks round too...like a red circle amongst the bald area.

I have had a few cases of ringworm in my household, and in one of my cats it started around her mouth. It's true that a black light will make it glow green but it has to be a fluorescent light. I hope for your sake that it is just a booboo, ringworm is a bit of a pain to get rid of. The good news is that if it is ringworm it isn't anything serious medically and is fairly inexpensive to treat. Good luck!
