Badly abused dog back on three feet

Badly abused dog back on three feet
By Scott Smith

SAN JOAQUIN BUREAU

LATHROP -- Angel is a spry 9-month-old Labrador mix and very curious about her new home at the Lathrop animal shelter, Pets & Pals.

But volunteers tending to her recovery say she's still a little leery of people who make sudden moves.

And rightly so.

Not long ago, a woman riding a horse along Clarke Road in a rural part of San Joaquin County east of Stockton discovered the blond puppy somebody had left for dead.

The dog had been bound with twine and wrapped in a black plastic bag. The skin on one side of her body showed signs the dog had been burned, a veterinary report says.

Maggots starting to collect on the open lacerations and severe dehydration were signs to veterinarians the dog, whom they named Angel for her amazing recovery, had been abandoned three days earlier.

That was Dec. 1, 2002. Five days later, a hind leg was amputated to spare her from threats of gangrene. Today, Angel's coat is growing back, and, moving on three legs, she chases a ball with no difficulty.

"We have had cases of abused animals like this in the past," said Sue Molen, executive director of Pets & Pals in Lathrop. "It is rare to see cases so severe like this."

Pets & Pals has set up a $2,000 reward for anybody who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who abused Angel.

Pets & Pals will place Angel in a loving home once she is ready, Molen said.

Unfortunately, says Officer Steve Thomas of the San Joaquin County Animal Control, Angel's case is not unique. San Joaquin County is known widely as the "capital of dumped animals" for the high number of abandoned animals, Thomas said.

"I've seen others like that, maybe not so drastic, but they're out there," Thomas said.

Last year, San Joaquin County Animal Control arrested only one person from among the numerous reports of abuse it investigated, Thomas said.

The penalty for animal abuse varies from case to case, he said, depending on the severity of the abuse and the offender's age. Animal abuse can be a felony, bringing a fine and a jail sentence of up to two years.

In days following the discovery of Angel, animal control officers carpeted the area and followed up on tips from citizens. But they were not able to make an arrest, he said.

"Hopefully, somebody comes forward," Thomas said.

The courts don't take animal cruelty seriously enough, according to Irene Porsch, a volunteer at Pets & Pals.

"When people do this to animals, they go on to do it to people," said Porsch, who also works part-time at the Associated Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Stockton, where Angel was treated.

Not sure if anyone will see this but I happened across this article. We were the lucky family who were able to adopt Angel (or Karma as she is now known) many years ago. She has been a treasure to have in our family and has lived a long, wonderful and loved life. We think she is near the end of her time with us, old age, tired body. I just thought people might want to know what happened to her after. A very short portion of her life was horrible, most of her life was in a very loving home in the country, we were priidged to have the opportunity to spend that time with her.

MTners it is so awesome that you could come back and share the awesome news of this poor puppy's fate!!! I am so pleased to hear that she has lived a long happy life considering such a tragic start to life.

Would you be willing to share a photo of Angel with us? would love to see what she looks like!

Again thank you so much for the update, we don't often hear such great news!!!! from horrible stories like this.

Always love to share photos!

These are mostly from our old place down in Gilroy. She could really run, climbed up on the hay bales, never really seemed to slow her down. We had a greyhound at one point too and she kept up with her really well. There's photos with our fluffy Molly, she too was a rescue we picked up from Pets and Pals who we sadly lost in November of 2012. The two of them were real buddies as you can see!

2 more photos of Karma

Here's the last two photos to share. One more with Molly. The last one is less than 1 year ago up in our new property. You can see she still has visible scars, the one across her nose is from part of the hog tying that was done to her, there are also ones across her legs and some burn scars. There's a big one around her neck that you can't really see.

She has never been a problem dog, no real baggage that she has carried. We are overly sensitive with her and how people approach her but she is a lover.

It's great to be able to share to some folks though as there are unfortunately plenty of dogs out there to rescue and they should know that they are great to have. And that we know our time is short with her now, she is nearly blind and hard of hearing, plus she is slowing down and has signs of a growth in her chest which we think is contributing to that.

Oh, Karma is absolutely beautiful, scars and all, Mtnears! And she looks so happy! How lucky for both of you that she ended up where she did.

Molly looks like a sweetie, too!

We, too, are in the 'time is short' camp. We have 5 geriatric dogs and 2 seniors and we just lost an 8th dog to cancer. So we definitely have that time issue in the back of our minds, too. Enjoy your girl to the fullest! I know she's loving being with you!

Wanted to update folks on some sad news for us, today we had to part with our friend Karma. She had a long, wonderful life with us and we were lucky to have her in our lives. She was happy and tail wagging until just hours before we had to let her go, this picture is from today. That always makes it hard, but it was her time, she simply could not walk anymore.

We will miss her dearly.

I'm so sorry to hear about Karma. You're in my thoughts and prayers--and thank you for giving her such a loving home! She was such a lucky girl when she found you!
