Turning off light.
Ok, this question may sound really dumb, but is there any way to get my dog to associate the light going off with the actual light switch?
When she scratches at the switch it goes down and the light goes off, which she understands, but I think she associates scratching at the wall with the light going off, rather than associating the switch going down with the light going off. Sorry if I'm not making any sense. I'd just like to know if there's a way to teach her that switch=light going off, not scratching wall=light going off. Is there a way I can teach her to turn it off with her mouth or something instead of her paw? I've been trying, and usually she catches on to stuff really quick, but I feel I must not be doing a good job of showing her, because she hasn't caught on. |

Start off by teaching your dog the touch game. Hold your palm up in front of her nose and tell her "touch". As soon as she touches your palm with her nose you treat. Once she gets the hang of the touch game you can exchange your palm with almost anything. Try one of those little yellow sticky notes and put it on your palm. When you ask her to touch and she does, treat. Now move the sticky to cover the light switch. You get the picture.

I just read your post over again and I think that your switch is a sliding bar type not a push type. Don't know if the touch game will be of any use to you after all. Sorry.

It's just a normal light switch, up=on down=off.
