i need some answers.plz
i have a manie coon. and i was reading up on the breead and i came across this on wikipeda "The most severe threat is feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), the most common heart disease seen in cats, whether pure bred or not. In Maine Coons, it is thought to be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Middle-aged to older cats as well as males are thought to be predisposed to the disease.[36] HCM is a progressive disease and can result in heart failure, paralysis of the hind legs due to clot embolization originating in the heart, and sudden death." what dose this mean. i really dont wanna lose my baby. crazycatlover

Just because your cat is a Maine Coon that doesn't mean that for sure he'll get that. Don't worry too much and try to make healthy choices such as good quality food and exercise for your fur baby.

As Koteburo mentions it's not a sure bet that your cat will develop HCM, when you take Dexter in for his regular vet visits have the vet take a look at his teeth to make sure there is no tarter build up or inflammation of the gums as this can lead to heart disease in anyone. Your vet can also listen to his heart to hear if there are any abnormal sounds that need investigating.

I agree with the others. Just because something is a 'severe threat' does not at all mean your cat will get it.
A very quick google search reveals that 70% of maine Coons will not develop the disease. I would ask my vet about it next appointment though as suggested.
