Cloudy eyes

Hi Everyone

I have a 5 year old cocker spaniel. Last night I went to wash his face (which sadly he hates) and I noticed that his right eye was totally clouded over and his left eye has a spot on this. Now I wash his face everyday and look into his eyes all of the time and have never noticed this cloudiness before. I took him to the Vet Hospital and they told me that it was likely cataracts. Does anyone know if cataracts can just appear? I'm going to own vet this evening for a second opinion and I'm hoping that this is perhaps an infection. Has anyone heard of Keritisis (not sure of the spelling)?
