Does your dog eat your cat's food?
Fill the cat bowl with dog food!
...it took me a year to figure this one out! |

I keep my cats food up high on a table so the dog can't get at it. However, my cats do sneak up and butt in when the dog is eating! they like to sample the bits of canned food out of his dish. lol...
they all get the same brand of canned food, Merrick, they just think the dog variety is better than the cat variety for some reason - personally, I think it's the "grass is always greener...." syndrome. |

My dogs used to devour the stuff in the litter box. They'd walk around the house with bits of clay bits on their muzzles looking like they'd just sampled the best truffles in the world.

you must have a small sized dog. not only does mine stand on two feet to reach the cat food on the table, he uses his nose and paws to open doors when I tried to feed the cats behind closed doors. The litter thing is easy to solve. buy one with a lid and point the opening towards the wall with enough space for the cat to get in and out but not enough for the dog to face. |

my dog is a 55lb basenji mix. he can jump straight up 5'. getting onto the table is NOT a challenge for him. he's trained NOT to. that's the cat's space, and he knows it. (not to mention, dog on table = VERY BAD MANNERS and is not tolerated)
as for the litter box, some cats do not like covered boxes. it really depends on what the cat prefers. I keep our litter boxes in a closed laundry room, and installed a cat door. |

I just wanted to add.. my dog is very well behaved, has great manners....BUT if our backs were turned and he REALLY wanted to get the cat food he would seriously think about trying for it.
Sometimes the immediate reward may be worth it So yeah, putting dog food in the cats dish eh? I never thought about it either, but ....what do the cats eat?

I keep the litter boxes in the basement... my dog is afraid to go down there, so no problems with that. However, he does help himself to cat food whenever possible, but it is not much of a problem because I feed one cat in a closed bedroom and the other in the kitchen. They have feeding times and the one in the kitchen eats pretty fast, so the dog rarely has a chance to get at it. Funny, though, he is picky about his own food, so I have on occasion put it in the cat's dish and he will eat it there but not out of his own bowl! The grass is greener, is right! Also, one of my cats will try and help herself to the dog food sometimes too. When I used to free feed the cat (when I only had one cat), I put the food bowl up on top of the refridgerator. This works well if you don't mind your cat up on the counters, etc. I did at first but have adapted... they have trained me well!
