Yet another housetraining question
My 6 month old Border Terrier is more or less housetrained. He hasn't gone in the house for quite some time, he will ask to go out during the day, and so on, but at night he is still having trouble.
He sleeps in an open kennel inside an enclosed pen, and we put newspaper at one end. He gets his last trip outside just before we go to bed, usually around 11. He will use the newspaper to pee occasionally, but it doesn't happen very often any more. But he still seems to, erm, poo nearly every night. I've been feeding him his last meal earlier and earlier (just before 6pm last night), but he still seems to go every night... Now, I know that smaller dogs often take longer to housetrain, but I'm starting to wonder whether it's time to start trying to restrict him to his kennel at night, in the hopes that he'll hold it if he's in there. I don't want to do it too soon though, as I don't want him to get used to going in there (and also because, rather peculiarly, he doesn't seem to try to avoid his own eliminations -- he will quite often step in them without being at all bothered, whereas my previous dog would go out of her way to avoid them). Suggestions? |

Do you walk him at night or ensure he poops before bed? I know with one of my dogs I have to be sure she poops before bed or she will have an accident.

I would look at changing his feeding schedule but I would remove the newspaper to reinforce you not wanting him to go in there. If he really has to go he may let you know in the middle of the night rather than doing it on the paper. Makes it confusing cause he lets you know already when he wants out but you still have paper for him!
Good Luck Cindy
