Chicken necks

I brought home some chicken necks. The cats immediately went into overdrive . I gave one to Wheezy (who's missing his top fangs but otherwise his teeth are fine) - and he went absolutely feral, growling and hissing. Anyway, after a couple of bites, I took it away (with great difficulty) because I was having visions of spending the night at the emergency clinic (after a 40$ cab ride). Am I worrying for nothing?

If you want to feel a bit more at ease with feeding necks, you can flatten/crush them by taking a meat mallet to them. I used the flat side of a small axe before I owned a mallet . A word of caution though, you might want to place the necks in a bag before taking a mallet to them or you'll have guck splattered all over your kitchen walls and ceiling .

Are chicken necks dangerous for cats to eat? Why should they be crushed? If feeding whole prey should those bones be crushed as well?

No, not any more dangerous than kibble. I mentioned that because Badger seemed uneasy about feeding necks. Although I don't have cats, I smashed down necks for my dogs when I first introduced them to raw...they tend to gulp (even large pieces) without chewing.

If feeding whole prey, just be sure to supervise your pets to make sure they are chewing properly. Keeping an eye on their poops is a good idea too to ensure they're digesting everything without problems.

We start all our young pups on chicken necks and wings when they are 6 weeks old and have never had any trouble. I don't think cats would have trouble with that.

I found them at my local IGA, first time I've seen them anywhere.
Thanks everybody, I feel a bit better.
Still, if someone is successfully feeding raw necks to their cats, I'd like to hear from them.

I wish! My guy just licks them to death, not quite the effect I was going for. I may have to try again with very small pieces and work my way up. Or something.

Hi Shane. I"m a fairly new pet owner, but I thought you were never to give a dog chicken bones because they splintered? So is there a difference in giving a cat chicken bones?

You're never supposed to give COOKED bones, those become brittle and splinter. Raw bones are soft and flexible and perfectly fine for dogs and cats. Very good for their teeth, in fact.
