An early sign of spring?
This guy decided to hitch a ride into the house on Keesha's leg tonight. I was a little surprised to say the least seeing as it's only Jan. I hope with this warm weather it doesn't screw up the animals and bugs too much. I'm assuming seeing him/her that it means there's more around.
So....... what is s/he? Probably about an inch and a half or so. I released him under a tree outside with lots of protection.

Definitely one for bendyfoot! She's the insect expert.
It seems awfully early for something like that to be out and about! Is there still snow on the ground there?

Funny, I saw a fuzzy little caterpillar on the road just last week...VERY out of season!
Well, yours has me stumped. It seems to be a butterfly cat of some kind, but gosh if I can figure it out. My gut is telling me it's something pesty...attacks crops or trees... I'll have to snoop some more tomorrow... the lighting is kind of weird, is the main body colour brown/beige? And the stripe on the side, is it red or pink?

It's not some sort of cutworm, is it?

Lighting was actually bang on in the first pic. The stripe was pinkish I think. I didn't get up that close and personal. Bugs and I are not normally on speaking terms. I release any that get into the house as long as they don't look like they want to take a piece of me with them. This guy looked pretty harmless. Pesty huh? Maybe I should have flushed him like hubby said too. hazel - we have only had maybe six inches of snow all winter. It's been raining today all afternoon and tonight so most of it is gone.

That's along the lines of what I'm thinking...but I'll be honest, my Lepidoptera larvae ID is shaky at best...I'll need a key to figure out what family this is in...

Take your time bendy. I just thought it was weird to have a bug like that out in January.

I had a bee at the front door the other day too....and my neighbour has a few daffodils already coming up...I wish it was a sign of an early early spring, but according to the forcast we're gonna be freezing our butts off again by the end of the week...

I had forgotten about this until this morning when I took pics off of the camera.
Very neat. I had never seen one of them around here. Probably froze to death when I put it outside. Will have to keep my eyes open if they are pesky. Thanks bendy

I'd forgotten too, to be honest, but I just stumbled on something that reminded me of it, and was able to follow through on a search pretty quickly once I was on the right track!

I'll make sure to ask for you specifically the next time I have a bug I don't know.

That could be frightening. How much damage could they do to plants. Do they go for young trees or garden plants?
