Introducing a friend/co-worker to RAW
So as I have mentioned I have told anyone and everyone about how great feeding a raw diet is. I tell people about the changes I have seen in my dogs and how easy it actually is.
Well to my surprise people have been listening to me, and in the last two days a couple people at work have approached me with questions. Some questions I was able to answer (where to purchase chicken necks, how much I spend a month, how soon I saw a change in the dogs….) but once its comes to the more technical questions I am a little stumped. I used to have quite a few links on my old computer regarding this topic but since it’s no longer working I don’t have easy of access to those links. I was going to send these now missing links (hehe) to my co-workers so that they can do their research before making the final decision. Please help me provide my co-workers with some reading material. I would like to supply them with links to websites that are short and sweet. Once that pretty much get right to the point and give tips as to and who much they should be feeding their dogs.

Glad you are getting better reactions than I have!
Here's a few links I use: To show how awful their current food really is: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ A nice practical website from someone who is raw feeding:http://www.rawdogranch.com/ A good all around info site that also debunks the myths of RAW feeding: http://www.rawfed.com/ Hope those help and congratulations for spreading the word!! Mostly I get "No! No! Bones are bad!" /sigh/ and then total shut down. Cass |

I have a friend that doesn't want to feed raw because she doesn't like to touch raw meat. Makes me so mad... so mad.

I understand your frustration - I feel the same way when I watch any dog food ads on TV. I mean I know all the mainstream big companies make their food mostly out of corn. How dare they lie like that on TV all the time!!
The Pedigree Healthy Vitality commercials really get my goat. Here are the first few ingredients on their list: GROUND YELLOW CORN, MEAT AND BONE MEAL, CORN GLUTEN MEAL, CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT MEAL, ANIMAL FAT (PRESERVED WITH BHA/BHT). I mean Come on! Please don't tell me that is healthy, will clean my dog's teeth and is good for it. In fact hasn't BHA been proven to cause cancer? Totally with you on the being pissed off front! Of course there is no point in getting too angry, waste of energy really some people hate change and will fight it tooth and nail. My own dear Husband has told me I've bought into the RAW propaganda but I feel it's more like I've woken up and smelled the slick marketing for what it is. Cass |

Considering raw is what cats and dogs naturally eat, tell your husband that it's actually everybody else that has bought into to whole pet food industry propaganda regarding commercial pet food. You're just going back to your animal's "roots".

So as I said above I have a friend that doesn't want to feed raw because she doesn't want to touch raw meet.
I got an email from her today. She was hanging out with her friend that just finished Vet Tech school. Here is the email; "FYI… Not rubbing it in or anything, but had to tell you that in Vet Tech school, Sarah learned that raw food diets are really bad for dogs.. Cause all kinds of worms and parasites apparently. I don’t know much about it but told her how Gizmo was doing so well on it and then she rhymed off all these reasons you shouldn’t have your dog on a raw food diet.. " I just told her that I was not surpriced that Sarah has this outlook because of all the money that commercial pet food companies "donate" to vet school and all the money that vet make when they sell dog food in thier clinics.

Another victim of the propaganda machine. /sigh/
Parasites indeed! I know I for one would rather have the parasites, that are at least natural, than the toxic preservatives and the completely inappropriate dry foods that all the vets are paid to recommend. I would rather have the 'unpleasantness' of handling raw meat(which I have to do for my family daily anyway - is my dog not family?) than the guilt of finally waking up and realizing that the food I was told was 'healthy and balanced' was actually overburdening my dog's pancreas and causing long term health problems that I would only see after years of damage. It makes me mad knowing that people are being misled by their vets - a friend of mine seemed to be seeing the light and was switching her dog to a better food at least when her vet told her "All dog foods have by-products in them. Why pay more when the $20 bag is just as good as the $40 bag?" So now she's going back to Pedigree Healthy Vitality. Going back to feeding her dog a carcinogen and corn. She thinks I'm wrong - we have to agree to disagree - and when her dog drops dead at 6 or 8 years old, what am I supposed to say? I've hardly spoken to her since, it's too hard for me to know that she has chosen to feed her dog something so substandard because some uneducated about nutrition vet told her "There is no difference." She thinks I've gone to far feeding raw. I guess we'll have to see whose dog lives longer and is healthier, huh? I mean I realize that raw isn't for everyone. It's not complicated but it does take some time to find cheap meat sources and stuff(yeah took me all of two weeks in my small city - wonder if it was worth it for the level of health my puppy will have for her whole life and my cat will have for the remainder of his?). I feel I have a good handle on it and I am no longer afraid. Cass |

*blinks* causes all kinds of worms and parasites huh?? this whole phobic fear of parasites on one hand makes me want to chuckle a little, on the other hand... makes me soo very sad.
you have worms already. you have parasites already. betcha you have even given your dog parasites. im sure s/he shared theirs right back. everyone has parasites. nobody wants to talk about it. not you, not your doctor, not your friends, parents... no one. its just too ewwie. anyone ever wonder how dogs and cats can get worms all the time?? i mean we worm our pets all the time!!! dogs and cats lick things with worms on them. they lick each other... just the same way babies do. the same way you did when you were a baby. they play in the dirt, the touch the doors and shoes and anything else and then.... stick their paws/fingers in their mouths. has your doctor ever asked for a stool sample? the vet asks it of your dog all the time. what makes you think you are so impervious to parasites?? you arent. your body just copes. how does it cope?? a healthy diet. you eat good, species appropriate foods. being omnivores, we eat just about anything that wont kill us. the variety is what keeps us kicking. feeding your pets a species appropriate food gives them the nutrition and immune response to cope with parasites, diseases. -ashley to also add, anyone who isnt willing to consider raw because of parasites should put that on the table until THEY go to their doctors and demand a parasite panel with a bag of their poo in hand.

I needed that! I have found the hardest thing about feeding raw is the utter lack of support I feel I have for it from 95% of the people I know and talk to in person |

i let my dog do the talking for me. he looked SOOOOO bad with his patchy dry coat, itching face and paws.... we had quite a few people see him in that state including the vet. to see him now is just amazing! he is so healthy and glossy and handsome. when folks ask, i politely tell them. thankfully most people ive talked to will either listen or nod and walk away.

Here is the intire email (my emails are pink, her's are blue)
FYI… Not rubbing it in or anything, but had to tell you that in Vet Tech school, Sarah learned that raw food diets are really bad for dogs.. Cause all kinds of worms and parasites apparently. I don’t know much about it but told her how Gizmo was doing so well on it and then she rhymed off all these reasons you shouldn’t have your dog on a raw food diet.. I am not shocked that Sarah said that. Most vets say it's not the idea food for dogs (mainly because of the money that the commercial food companies pump into vets schools and give to vet clinics). It doesn't change my out look on the subject because most holistic vets say it's really good for dogs (the vets that DON'T sell pet food in their clinics). Also, the next time you go to the vet and Bailey needs meds DON'T purchase them at the clinic. As the vet to write a prescription. Then go to a human pharmacy. They will have it there for 1/3 of the price. We’ll have to agree to disagree on the pet food thing. Sarah works at a hospital that does not sell product and I don’t believe that the scientific research and cultures she studied at school would be biased. The studies are for the good of the animals. I can’t even really see that the school receives a lot of money from manufacturers of dog food. The tuition fees are crazy so I would think that pays for almost everything and the government subsidizes the rest. Thanks for the tip re: prescriptions though. I will definitely take that into consideration… Raw is a really controversial topic. I have read a lot about the topic (not that I went to school for it) and I have read the pros and cons. Most of the articles that I have read were written by vets and state that it's better. But like you said we should agree to disagree. I haven't brought it up with you in a while (and remind me NEVER to bring it up around Sarah). No, not a good idea to bring it up around Sarah. Pretty insulting to her profession. The only reason I brought it up is because I was concerned for your dogs. Same reason you kept bringing it up to me. It’s not a matter of who’s right. Just keeping each other informed.. The part that I like is "Pretty insulting to her profession" and "I am concerned for your dogs". This from a girl that wouldn't read one (not one) artical that I sent her because she doesn't like to read on her computer.

The sad truth is that the VAST majority of animal nutrition research is funded by pet food companies. Since pet food is a multi-billion dollar industry, they have the biggest vested interest. The government doesn't fund this stuff.....private citizens don't fund it.....who does that leave? The pet food industry. And guess what? If the results of their "research" don't jive with their drive for enormous profit margins, those results never get published. If these "studies" were for the good of the animals, then why are the animals basically tortured in feeding trials and other so-called "research" (google "Iams animal testing" for instance)? It saddens me and frustrates me to no end that so many people have bought into Big Pet Food lies, and especially when it's the veterinary community. Your friend probably won't want to read these links either, but in case someone else is interested, here's some eye-opening reading: http://www.catnutrition.org/openletter.php http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spri...tFood/Vets.htm http://naturalcathealth.blogspot.com...ty-of-pet.html http://www.mousabilities.com/nutrition/testimony.html Personally, I think commercial pet food is responsible for more death and illness in dogs and cats (especially cats!) than any other single cause.

And I wonder if her Vet Tech freind mentioned anything about a little chemical called ethoxyquin??? I bet not.
My sister did a science fair project on ethozyguin. She had a large dog food manufacture send her some. But before hand my parents had to sign a release form with all these restrictions (one stating that no one in the household would injest). Anyways she put just the smallest little drops on roots of bean plants and one day later all the roots came to the top of the soil and exploded. Saw it with my own two eyes. My sister ended up going to the Univ. of Guelph for food science. Anyways - ethoxyquin is found in dog food. A chemcial that makes roots of plants explode. And here I thought I was making progress with her. I guess I am not very good at introducing raw to friends.

I hope you get a good grade on your project. I have been feeding raw for over 4 months now and my pup is pratically glowing with health. I've fed her some pretty nasty stuff without her even turning a hair let alone getting sick.
Let's face it, considering all the junky things that are in pet foods, the pet food industry are pretty much counting on the dogs tolerating a great deal without getting sick. Cass |

Well good for you for doing a paper on raw feeding. They tell you all this nonsense. Dogs lick their butts and any other dogs butt which is loading with e-coli, and they don't get sick from it. They will bury something for 2 days then dig it up and continue to eat it and are fine with it. Most people that know I feed raw look at me like I have 2 heads. But my dog is fine, he has good poops, no gas, and the few bumps he had on his muzzle are gone. And he is sooooo happy when it is time to eat. I love to see him really enjoying his meals. Eileen

Ugh!
I have NOT had the best reactions from even MY family with feeding a raw diet.
Granted I'm kind of hypocritical when it comes to it since I try to feed as much Raw as I can, but it's a tad expensive, so I feed Wellness Core Ocean along with the raw diet. ANYWAYS, all of my family think that all dog food is PERFECTLY balanced for dogs, and that they wouldnt sell anything that could be harmful to dogs Or I also get the " Its just a DOG..." ( This usually comes from my back woods cracker family ) I just dont know HOW to show them all the HORRIBLE things are in some of these dog foods. My MOTHER feeds Science Diet!! I will forever keep trying. I wish I was as good at spreading God's word as I was about preaching about dog food... Course I get about the same reaction with both. |
