Diabetic dog
Hi all, I was sitting reading the communications about how hard it is to live with a diabetic dog, it just breaks my heart. My Westie,Odie was diagnosed in November, it has been a rollercoaster ride! It started with an injection of prednesone for his skin which threw him into diabetes in a few days. Since then, like many, he has gone blind and developed glaucoma. The past few months we have been through a few seizures, got through them with a syringe of karo syrup and food when he came around. I work but have the freedom to come home at lunch time, so we have him pretty well regulated on Vetsulin 2x a day, $$$ later, we are going day by day. He is 13 now, hope to have some more happy times together before the end. God bless all the animal lovers out there, "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted....

Hi patstoy, and welcome to pets.ca! Bless you for being so dedicated to Odie. I know how tough it is sometimes to be the caregiver of a diabetic animal (my cat, Aztec, has had diabetes for 5+ years). However, it can also be extremely rewarding, and the bond that develops is very special. It's because of Aztec's illness that I've learned so much about feline health and nutrition, and I'm actually thankful that he helped me to "see the light".
Have you had much of a chance to check out some of the excellent websites on canine diabetes? This one: http://www.caninediabetes.org/ has info on how to home test your dog's blood glucose. Not sure if you already do that, but if not you might want to consider it. There is no better way to keep track of how your dog is doing on a particular insulin dose, and hopefully you can avoid any future hypoglycemic episodes. Here are some more links: http://www.petdiabetes.com/ http://petdiabetes.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page http://www.petdiabetes.net/ All the best to you and Odie. Let us know how he's doing.
