Worried about neighbors dogs.
Hi everyone,
my new neighbor has two dogs, one a poodle and the other a medium sized schnauzer. They used to be inside dogs but are now outside because of his son supposedly having developed allergies, although I believe that that's just an excuse, since he told me himself that his wife don't like dogs Are there any rescue groups for cases like that,I constantly worry and feel sorry about them. I wish I could take them but since we got a 11 week old puppy my husband doesn't want me to. I can't stand people like that, they get dogs, keep them indoors and then all of a sudden they end up outside I keep on telling myself that at least for now they have each other but the poodle is already 11 and the schnauzer only 4 or 5,I thought that perhaps once the poodle passes away I could somehow find the schnauzer a new good home,I just don't quite know how to go about it... Thanks in advance for your suggestions! Annette. |

but , like I said , they MUST have food , fresh water and shelter , oh and vet care if needed . If not , the spca will give them a warning , then go back after a while if if the situation hasn't change , then they can seize the dogs. |

Thanks Frenchie!
How would I go about it if he was willing to surrender them? Thanks! Annette. |

If he's willing , then contact a rescue in your area (where do you live ?) and ask them if they could take both dogs.

I live near Raleigh NC.
Would I need to contact a breed specific Rescue group? |

I found these breed rescues in North Carolina :
www.ncshnauzers.org and www.carolinapoodlerescue.org/poodlepatrons.shtml you can start with them , but there's also a lot of other all breed rescues in your area . Good luck and keep us posted ! |

I haven't talked to the guy yet since it's a conversation I'm dreading, the dogs seem to be "ok" for now but if not before than I thought I could at leats find a new home for the schnauzer once her "brother" passed away. I still would prefer if I could find new homes for both of them though. Some people should have to pass a test before being allowed to have pets! |

Annette,we all agree with you..
I would keep an eye on those dogs,it must be really hot and humid in NC this time of year. If they don't have water and a shelter away from the sun,I would consult with a rescue-group or Humane Society. I know you want to do something to help these dogs and worry about them,I've been there and just felt I HAD to do something, very frustrating Maybe you should start by having a talk with the owner..please let us know what happens,ok

Like the others have said, without the owners consent, a rescue can't intervene. However if you suspect abuse the SPCA can and should be called.
Standard Schnauzers (the mid sized) are really quite unique and if you contact the breed club, they can put you in touch with rescue in NC that is specific to them. |

If you are neighbourly enough with them, and they truly are interested in their dog's well being, casually bring up the topic of rescue groups and what they do. Let them know if they are ever interested in taking that route, you can provide them with some reputable rescues that may be able to assist. Provide them with internet sites so that they may read more about the groups and what they do. They may not budge now, but they will be empowered with options for later.
Good luck. |

Thanks for the helpful suggestions!
I have written to both rescue groups, haven't heard back from the schnauzer one but this is the email I got back from the poodle rescue: IF THE OWNER WILL GIVE THEM UP BRING THEM TO ME!!!!! SHEESH!!!!! I replied asking where it was located at but haven't heard back yet... |

Is the poodle a standard, miniature, or toy? I'm asking because you have mentioned "once his brother passes" and age 11 a couple of times. I have a toy who is 16 and still doing well.......... Chances are if he's a larger breed he won't live that long but..... did you want to take that chance?
Thank you for caring.

I don't want to take that chance but since this is unfortunately my next door neighbor and me being on the shy side I have been putting it off,I don't want to offend him and risk that he ends up him telling me to mind my own business and telling me that his dogs are fine the way they are. Somehow I don't believe the spca could do much since they have shelter(?) as well as food and water, which off course in my opinion isn't enough but unfortunately there are no laws saying that a dog has to receive affection as well,I wish there were. |

Anette,I used to be like you too,shy and afraid to offend people.
However today,I am the total opposite, especially when it comes to the treatment of animals. The thing is,since you love animals, seeing these dogs every day, will wear at you and you won't feel good until something is done. I know,I've been in that situation. Even if you just talk to the owner, tell him/her how you feel, get it off your chest..do you really care what he think's of you?? The animals are at the mercy of the owner, has nobody else to speak for them,so I would certainly say something and if there is any abuse, would report it.

I've had a piece of paper and pen laying here all day trying to come up with something to say to him which would sound alright but so far hadn't had any luck with it. I could really use some suggestions about how for example would some of you approach it,what would you say. I'm don't think there's any abuse in the physical sense and I'm afraid if I call the local spca they will just make sure that the dogs have adequate water, food and shelter but can't do anything about them not getting any affection. Thanks in advance! |

GOOD NEWS!!!
I just got done talking to my neighbor after speaking to a great lady at the Carolina Poodle Rescue. She said if I could get my neighbor to agree to release the dogs she could arrange for a transport. He agreed Now I just have to call Donna at the Poodle Rescue back to make the arrangements, hopefully for next weekend. If all of this works out I'll be sooooo happy for those dogs!!! |

How right you are
I just called Donna from the rescue group back and she was really pleased as well, she said she'd arrange a transport as soon as possible, for one thing to get the two dogs away from that horrible invisible fence which I had told her about. Thanks chico2 and everyone else!! You listened to me,gave me helpful suggestions as well as strength to take it on !!! |
