Please, help needed in Colombia southamerica!!!

Hello, first of all, let me apologize for my English. My name is Juliana and I'm from Colombia southamerica. I rescue dogs and catd from the streets all the time because we have a huge problem of stray dogs here. I rescued two 2 days old puppies with the mother death. I fed him and raised them and now they're one and a half months. But they've been very sick. they had abscess and the vet gave them Unasyn, then they had a very persistent Urinary infection. The vet treated them with ampicillin, then one of the puppies had like a skin infection which was treated with Keflin, now i have two mayor problems: One of the puppies' urine is very yellow, and the smell is too strong, i put newspappers on the floor so she can pee on them, and when the urine is dry i can see like "glitter", it's like the place where she pee was shiny. the other dog has problems walking, she can't stand up, i have some videos online the problem is basically in the hind legs (http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=21458144881) she also moves her rear legs a lot when she’s sleeping (http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=21784759881). I don’t know how to proceed anymore. thanks for your help

Juliana,

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately I cannot see the videos however I would like to help you as much as I can.

The 'glitter' from the dried urine is crystal formation. The fact that the urine is dark yellow and 'strong' means that the kidneys are working hard to conserve water in the body. This can be a body's response to dehydration or lack of water intake. If the pet is not feeling well and is not drinking enough water then this can occur. The crystals may be a primary problem but can be secondary to the high concentration of urine.

Can you describe the hind limb problem of the other puppy? Or perhaps have another link to the video that does not require membership to access?

Hope this helps.

We did an urine exam and it showed that she has an infection, there's presence of estruvite crystals. I was wondering, since she have taken so many antibiotics, is it ok to treat her with Bactrim? is it good for her liver and kidneys? And since you mention it, she doesn't take that much water. I mixed the dog food with milk with no lactose and with water. But i also put a water bowl, and she doesn't drink that much. I've been giving her Vit C. Is there any other suggestion.
About the videos, i'll upload them to my server this afternoon, and i'll post the links so you can download them. Or if you have an email, i can send them to you. I'm very concerned, because at this point she should be able to pee and evacuate fully aware or when she's standing up, but she is laying down and suddenly she is "swimming " urine and faeces. I don't know if this happens because she is not able to stand up in time or if she even notices...
Thank you so much for your help! You're the first person in the world that answered! Thanks!

I hope things go well with the little ones, I was able to see the video and I"m no vet but I'd say there is a serious problem with the pups hip? Hope Dr. Lee can help you, and god bless for helping these little ones.

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is a common medication used for urinary tract infections. Struvite crystals can sometimes be formed secondary to infection. If the puppy has been on other antibiotics, the concern can be that amount of medication that is going through the pet's system and whether or not there is any antibiotic resistance. However, if a bacterial infection exists, then proper antibiotic therapy is needed. Beyond a urinalysis a culture of the urine can grow the bacteria and test which antibiotic is best for that particular infection.

Vitamin C. Overall it is very safe. Large amounts however can lead to urine crystals and even stones. Humans and guinea pigs require Vitamin C, dogs however can synthesize Vitamin C on their own and typically do not require supplementation. Just FWIW.

How is this puppy feeling overall? If she isn't drinking much, then how is her appetite and activity level? What clinical signs other than her concentrated, 'strong' urine?

If you PM me, I can send you my email address for those videos. Please let me know how I can help.

Thanks for the answer. I've only given her a couple of miligrams, not to much, just a drop every day for 2 days of Vitamin c. She is very active, she runs and is always playing, always, they don't eat too much but i've been feeding them 3 times a day. she has no other clinical signs, except for the urine and some pus inside the ..vagina (? i hope i'm not saying the wrong word)i already started the Bactrim, 0.6ml every 12 hours.
i uploaded the videos and these are the links:
This video is when she was 15 days old, she was sleeping and you can see the position of her legs (even when she was awake) and how she moved her legs: http://www.corporacionraya.com/video...ldsleeping.wmv
This video is when she was 5 weeks and it shows what she did t walk: http://www.corporacionraya.com/video...walk5weeks.wmv
And these 3 videos are about a week ago, when she was 6 weeks. The show her "walking" , "running" ans moving her legs in her sleep
http://www.corporacionraya.com/video...leep6weeks.wmv
http://www.corporacionraya.com/video...orun6weeks.wmv
http://www.corporacionraya.com/video...walk6weeks.wmv
thank you very much for your help. I do this, i mean looking for help in forums like this because there are no specialists here in colombia and veterinary medicine is not very developed.
Again, thanks

Julianna,

From the videos I am concerned that there may be some neurologic disease present. I cannot rule out pelvic disease but I am leaning more towards a neurologic problem.

Couple questions.
1) have the clinical signs improved, worsened or stayed the same?
2) Are the front legs working 100% or is there some loss of coordination there as well?
3) When did this start? Was she ever normal?

Thanks.

Dr. Lee correct me if i'm wrong, but are the pups not missing antibodies because of losing their mommy so young, thus not getting the antibodies in the mothers milk?

The special milk which contains antibodies which the puppies need for their immunity is called colostrum. Colostrum is only made during the first 24-48 hours post partum (after birth). Also it is only during this first day or so of life that the puppies intestinal tract will allow such large protein complexes like antibodies directly into the blood stream intact. So ideally, pups should be with their moms for a while but it does not always happen this way. The puppies immunity should fine from an antibody stand point. Good question.

Good day!
1) have the clinical signs improved, worsened or stayed the same? actually she is improving, not too much, but at least now she can stand up, and hold it for a couple of seconds, Before she couldn't even stand or move at all
2) Are the front legs working 100% or is there some loss of coordination there as well? Yes, teh front legs are fine, she moves with them.
3) When did this start? Was she ever normal? She’s been this way since I rescued her, it seems like a congenital disease or malformation, she doesn’t feel too much, I mean she can feel extreme stimulus, but the vet said she didn’t have superficial sensitivity . she also has a weird thorax, when she was about 15 days it was concave, now it’s just weird and I can see she has the column is not straight i think
thank you very much

PD: I have to say she is my happy baby, she loves to play and bite things. She is in a good mood all the time, sometimes she feels frustrated because she can't follow the step to her sister, but she's ok
