Need some advice..
Ok, So i adopted a one year old Chi. I have an 8 month old chi that i got when she was 8 weeks old. But feeling the empty nest syndrome I decided to get coco. I was told when i adopted him that he was having problems house training. I accepted that and am willing to work with him and train him. Myself or my husband are with him all day. Now my problem is that i have never paper trained a older chi. My younger one was really easy to train. Coco was left in the house all day to do his business any were he wants. I live up north and it has been -33 out for the past coupple of days which is why i am paper training so they don't freeze. I have tried to take him outside and get him to do his business but he stands their and whines.
Basically I am willing to do anything and everything to get him paper trained. But i am not sure if what i am doing is right. I am taking him to a puppy pad every 20 min and telling him to go pee. And if i catch him sniffing and pacing then i will take him and do the same thing. If my other chi is going to the paper then i will take him and show him hoping that he will get the hint. He has had one accident since getting him home and that was right after i brought him back in and took him to his pad. Then he came into the living room and before i could catch him he did his business. Is training an older chi different from training a puppy? He is fixed and i don't have to worry about him spraying. I jsut don't want to do something wrong. He was never trained in anything and does not know how to play properly. He is not agressive with my other dog at all. Thanks in advance.

Nope, training an older dog is just like training a puppy. Be patient and expect some accidents. Watch him for his signals and set him up for success--then praise him when he manages to hit the papers. If you catch him eliminating in an inappropriate place, get his attention (a throaty ahn-ahn should be sufficient) and carry him to the paper. Praise him if he finishes in the proper place. If he goofs up and you don't catch him at it, don't scold or punish, just clean up and watch him more carefully next time.
Consistency and patience will pay off.  It may take a while if he was allowed to pee and poop in the house before you got him--he's got some bad habits to overcome. Has he been crate trained? That might be a good option for you--he's not likely to eliminate in a small crate. Then just treat him like a puppy--offer him the paper when he first comes out of his crate and whenever you see him signalling that it's time to go. Good luck with Coco's training.

I agree with Hazel ....she has given you great advice.
The only thing I could add is, if you want your doggies to eventually eliminate outside then put the paper/pads as close to the door as possible.

My girl that i got as a puppy will go outside when it is not to cold out and during the summer. I didn't crate train my girl but i think i am going to do that with coco. He has just to many bad habbits. I will have to do my research on how to properly do that with him.

Well just an update. It has been an exciting 3 days watching this dog come to life. He will actually play with my pup an cats now. Crate training him is going better then expected. He has had no accidents today! THe past three days were the first time he has been outside in the snow. IN HIS LIFE. That is comming along too. He will now walk around and sniff the snow, and then do his business. When i first got him cudling was the last thing he wanted to do. Tonight i had him on my chest and loosly held him their and stroked his back and his ears and he fell alseep their for an hour. I felt bad moving him but i really had to pee. And now i can't get him off me!! I am just so happy that i have got to made a difference in his life. He is really an amazing dog. I can't wait till it gets warmer out so i can really socialise him.

Ok I will get to the pics. COCO is doing amazing. The way the old owners were talking I was thinking I was in for a few weeks of constant supervision and cleaning up messes. Personally I think it was lack of attention behind his reasons why he was doing his business wherever he wanted to. I am not a professional but that is my conclusion.
 He has been doing his business outside every day now. No accidents in the house. He is playing very well with the cats and the dogs and the babys. He is so playfull and has such a personality. I have been bringing him eveyrwhere i got(within in reason) to hlep socialise him. Taking him on car rides, bring him him into work on my days off( they allow it and love it) I am thinking of signing both my chi's up for the dogs that go into nursing homes. i am still looking ito it. I am not sure if they allow little dogs but i did it with my lab. SHe had to pass a test and then she was allowed to go with me into nursing homes to visit the people who lived their. Some of the people love it and would love to see her other people didn't like it. But she was a great dog ( )and love to go see the people. My girl is very well trained and you can maul her and she will just lay their and take it. Coco was never shown how to follow comands like sit or say or simple things. That is a work in progress. I just wish you all could see how far this guy has come in less then a week. It almost makes me want to cry. Well enough of my story here are the pictures!!!   This is coco!!! Well of course you had to include the kitties! Kitties require equal time!
 Especially when there is kitty kuddling going on They're all adorable! I love Daytona's collar! She looks so fashionable in her bling! And Coco is a handsome dude!  I'm so glad he's fitting in so well!
