Orijen and stinky poop!

I finally persuaded Lola that orijen puppy (she is 8 months) was the best food for her after reading all the posts, and now she eats it, but WOW do her poops stink now

I don't particularly find that she does less but they REALLY do smell AWFUL!! all the kids gag when she goes.

Anyone else find this?

Hmmm, I feed all my kids half Orijen/ half RAW but have never noticed this... although I do notice that sometimes they get pretty wicked gas from the fish

When she is ready to move onto adult kibble, could you try her on Acana? They are manufactured by the same company as Orijen but have less protein. I wonder if the high protein content is making her poops stinky? Just a thought...

Could there be another health issue here? Does she have a clean bill of health?

Just an aside, were you not feeding Lola RAW?

How long has she been eating it? How much do you feed her? And how much does she weigh?

Yes, and very bad gas!! very very stinky.
Buddy's gas was so bad, he was sleeping beside the carbon monoxide detector one day (passing gas as usual) and it went off!

The food doesn't work for every dog. Mine had really bad gas on oven baked grain free, most digestable apparently. Couldn't take the smell. She is fine on the others.

Jersey and Kato are fine on the Orijen, however they do get bad gas from time to time.
Abby on the other hand, constant bad gas, and her poop really stinks too. Her poop is also "looser" than the other dogs.
Otherwise she is good tho, her coat has never looked this good, her redness hasn't come back and she doesn't chew on herself like she used to on other food.
Btw, Goober "seems" to be doing well on his new food too.

How much are you feeding Abby, LMPG? Do you feed once or twice a day? When we have fosters, I find that if I just cut back a bit on the amount, stools firm up quickly.

You could try to supplement their diet with a bit of charcoal. it helps with the gas and bad smell.

These posts are older and not necessarily still active with the original poster?

Red face Stinky Poop

My 3 month old cattle dog's poop stinksssss so bad from Orijen as opposed to the Royal Canin the breeder had him on. I don't mind. I guess it's just a small part of the job lol. He doesnt get very bad gas but he is a very energetic working dog breed so all that high protein is very good for him!
But boy does his toodles stink!!!!!!!

There is a transition period when you switch from a brand with lots of grains and fillers to a premium brand with high quality ingredients ....it can sometimes take 2-3 months for dogs to adjust. Try adding some digestive enzymes to see if that helps.

Rainbow...would plain yogurt help? Only asking as this is what I do.

It does help but sometimes not enough. I guess I should have said to try the plain yogurt (a brand that only lists milk ingredients and active bacterial cultures) first and if that doesn't work then try the digestive enzymes.

Go ahead and try slower diet changes and probiotic supplements, it probably won't work. The stink and volume are normal and will not go away. They are caused by the excessive protein and the pumpkin. It is not the right food for every dog.

I use Orijen and have no issues, poop is firm and consistent (well variable if I have been giving extras) no gas that I notice (my dog is 14lbs so I dunno if I would notice unless it was really bad). As stated it is not the right food for every dog, if your dog is not coping well it is probably best to discontinue using Orijen or just not buy it next time. High protein can cause kidney issues if the dog can not handle it, as well horrible poop can be indicating the body is simply not coping.
