Unhappy Anal sacs

I took my 2 year old cat into the vet today and was informed that he has anal sac secretion. Although the vet attempted to expel the sacs himself, he was unable to and stoppped due to my cat's obvious pain. He then told me that although Oreo's glands were quite large that I should wait to see what happens. So now I am waiting for Oreo to expell them himself. However, I feel like I am letting my cat suffer. Is there anything else that I can do? He is otherwise perfectly healthy, up-to-date on shots, and appears to be happy. I am a first time cat owner and am not sure what to do. I just want to take the best care of my baby.
