question about feline anemia
greetings! I have just now registered and have a question about the treatment plan for my 16 year old cat suffering from anemia. Vet has conducted all required testing and it seems to be anemia caused from a flea bite... the flea must have been a carrier of the bacteria that can cause anemia. my guy is losing weight still and is so stressed from going to the vet he has stopped eating. i am force feeding and he is on prednisone, doxyclcline and lixotinic. has anyone had success with this type of treatment? thank you!

No advice for you, lftyrrell, but I do want to send along some for your kitty! Hope he's better soon!

An angel with fur
My precious Milo Kitty died at home today peacefully in my arms. He waited until I came home and it was an honor to be with him as he took his last breath. He was a rescued Ragdoll that spent 16 years with me and I will miss him with all my heart.

Quote:
It is a blood borne pathogen that is commonly transmitted through fleas. Here is an excerpt from a Client Education Handout Series by By Wendy C. Brooks, DVM, DipABVP "The agent of what has traditionally been called feline infectious anemia is an organism called (until recently) Hemobartonella felis. This creature is technically a bacterium but is a member of a group of bacteria called mycoplasmas. Mycoplasmas are different from other bacteria because they do not have a cell wall surrounding and protecting their microscopic bodies. They cannot be cultured in the lab like normal bacteria because they require living hosts.Again, the above was written by Wendy C. Brooks, DVM, DipABVP in a client handout series. Most cats do well if they can get through the initial few days of treatment when the anemia is most severe. At 16 years of age, the recovery may be more difficult. I hope that this helps.

I am very sorry for your loss. It is so difficult losing a member of the family.
