Being trained by a bulldog
Hi there,
So I have been having quite a time socializing and helping my bulldog guest to adjust to family life as one of three dogs. I just realized today though, that he has been training me as well. When his water bowl is getting low, he points to it with his head, looks at me and barks once- pauses, barks again. I get it and fill his bowl up. When he loses a toy under the furniture, his head is to wide and he can't retrieve it so he looks at his toy, looks at me and barks once- pauses and barks again. I give him back the toy. What a communicator! He doesn't bark excessively and he doesn't use it for other purposes, just to request some help.. Am I learning or what? Do you think I should give him a clicker??!?

The rules of the forum state that if you are going to tell a cute story about a cute visitor that you must post pics of said cute visitor as well.
That sounds wonderful!! I have a few "communicators" myself!! |

Hello 14+,
Clearly I did not understand the rules, so I have included a few pix from this weekend. Although I have yet to capture the "bark" I think you can see how expressive our guest Bulldog is from his face. We took him to on a camping trip for the first time. Our other dogs stayed with someone else, so we had time to lavish on Harv alone.

aww he's so cute!
My in-laws have a fawn coloured bulldog, her name is Dalai (as in Dalai Lama). She can be VERY bossy! and she definitely is the queen bee of that entire household! But we all love her anyways. So what is Harveys status in your house? Are you keeping him, or is he still there on a trial run? How did he enjoy camping?? Did he like roughin' it or did he miss all the luxuries of home!?

Hello Mollywog,
I love the name Dalai. It is so beautiful and fitting of a bulldog! Harv is indeed VERY bossy. His saving grace in the first two weeks, was his cuteness and his motivation to please. You could tell that he just didn't know how to do it any other way. He was so stressed when he first came to visit- he had a hard time relaxing, cuddling or just calming. All noises startled him, and anything mechanical was very challenging to him. He is much more relaxed now, as you can see in the pictures and sleeps and cuddles with us. I think he is just happy to not have to be the boss anymore It looks like we will have him for at least 6 months. He is still a handfull, but he is learning quickly. I have started some obedience with him, so wish me luck. As for camping, he is a hotel dog I think. He is just starting to play on the grass in our yard without a big fuss. He prefers ashphalt and cement to grass or dirt. He was great in the tent though, and did well with our friends and children, he just missed room service.

There is a saying that can relate to a bulldog...
"Have you had the pleasure of being owned by a bulldog" He looks cute! |

Thanks Brecker. I can completely relate to that quote, it is entirely true.
He is pretty cute, and full of interesting character which I have not seen often. He is kind of like living with a grumpy old man... Just what I need, more grumpy old men in my life!

That cuddling pic is precious, Macomom! I can see he's trying to stay aloof
Talk about drinking in the lovin'! What a cutie!

Yes, in that cuddling picture he kind of looks like he is saying "Oh no, not again", but he had spent several hours sleeping across my lap. That was his sleepy waking up face...
He reminds me of the two old men from the Muppet Show? Does anyone remember their names?
