Which cat is the guilty one?
We have three cats in our house - two are mine, who moved in with me, joining my roommate and his cat. His cat and mine do not get along, but everyone is relatively civil, just a bit of hissing now and then when they get too close or surprise each other, no fighting.
But someone is peeing outside the litter box, and we can't figure out who it is. Any time a bag of mine made of that nylon/canvas (knapsacks, bike bags, etc.) is left on the floor, almost guaranteed it will be peed on. Doesn't seem to happen to Tony's stuff. Also have had pee in and around my computer area. Never near his. In an around my bedroom - never in his. Have also found pee beside the toilet, and on the bathmat now and then. Needless to say, we THINK it is his cat, Miata. But we have never caught anyone in the act. Is there a way to tell? Have read some of the tips about trying to find a spot for a safe third litter box (we are in a small house, so we only have two), etc., and will be trying those as well - but the main thing is identifying the guilty party to help us act accordingly. Thanks! Drew |

Welcome AthleteTO. Is there any way you can separate the cats one into a room for a day and see what happens? Maybe put something down on the floor that would be peed on and hope that the guilty one will do the deed.
A few questions if I may. How were the kitties introduced to each other? Were they just put in with each other to "work it out"? Were they separated for a while in rooms so they could learn to recognize each others' smells? Have they all been to the vet lately to rule out UTI's or other illness'? Are the boxes in a spot(s) that are detrimental to a cat being able to use them? Too close to a noisy appliance which may have turned on while kitty was using the box and now kitty associates the noise with the box. Is one of the cats (the "guilty" one) being sabatoged while trying to use the box? As in - is there a possibility that one of the others is lying in wait till the cat approaches the box or is already in the box and then pounces? Do any of the cats seem to be more stressed than usual?

Couple more questions to add to 14+:
How often is the box cleaned? What type of litter do you use, and is this a change for any of the cats? I would for sure try to find a way to add another box in a new location, even if it has to be in a bedroom closet or under the kitchen table (nothing motivates you to clean a box religiously more than having it in the kitchen!). A vet check for everyone would also be an excellent idea. Some Feliway diffusers and/or spray may also help if territorial issues or stress are at the root of the problem. There is also a litter called Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract that is very successful at getting cats back to using the box. Provided that the underlying source, whether stress or health related, is dealt with as well.

Thanks SCM. I knew there were more questions to ask. Blame it on brain fart.
Another one is how old are the cats? What foods do they eat re: formation of crystals and stones? Is it peeing or spraying? Are all of the cats fixed? All of these can have a play in what is happening with the urine. How are you cleaning the urine smells? You need a cleaner like Nature's Miracle, an enzyme cleaner, to help get rid of the smells. You may not be able to smell them any more but I can guarantee the kitty can. That may lead to more peeing, spraying, etc.
