Brown dry rim on tongue
Hi there!
We just rescued an 8 yr old yorkie. He has no teeth and his tongue hangs out as a result. Today I noticed that the edge of the tip of his tongue is dark brown and dry. What would cause this and anyone have any ideas on how I can get his tongue back to a nice pinky color? Thanks! Toothless Chewie |

Is it old blood? Does it have an odor. Maybe he has a tooth that was broken off below the gum.

I wonder if that's just from the tongue not being held in the mouth? If he's been in rescue, then maybe just some good care will help?

Is this something new or was the tongue always this way? Have you taken him to the vet for a wellness checkup yet? I also have a rescue dog without teeth and her tongue hangs out. She does hold it in occasionally when she's on alert or busy running about the house. When she's relaxed though it hangs all the way out and it gets very dry. I've never seen the tongue be any colour other than pink though. I would ask the vet's opinion also as they may have some tips on how to keep the tongue moist.
