Post-spay complications in cat

I recently adopted a cat from a rescue group. She received her vaccinations on Tuesday and underwent the spay surgery on Wednesday. I brought her home on Wed. night and she did not eat for the next two days. I brought her back to the vet on Saturday morning - they gave her sub-q fluids and an anitbiotic shot. On the ride home - she peed out most of the fluids, on to herself.

I tried to clean her up - and I now have to force feed her and pill her twice daily. Tonight, she peed herself again - and has not groomed herself since Wednesday. Any idea what's going on here? When I adpoted her the rescue group had not had her checked by a vet which struck me as odd. I'm worried that I may have adopted a very sick animal? Or is it just stress from the surgery?

Vaccinations and surgery within two days - I don't know if her reactions are from that, or if she has an underlying illness. If this "rescue group" does not get their cats vet checked first, I'm afraid she might be sick, and of course surgery and shots would not help!

These symptoms certainly aren't normal reactions to simply being spayed. She needs to go back to the vet asap.

I had her seen by a cat specialist today and you were right - she may have liver problems and possibly FIP. The spay surgery certainly put distress on her little system but because she hadn't been checked out properly before this made it worse.

OMG, this is just horrible and I'm so sorry for both this kitty and for you!

Please contact this "rescue" if you haven't and inform them of this. They should be paying for the vet care!!

By the way, is this group on Petfinder? If so, there is one month free vet care that comes with the adoption.

I was doing a search online and came across this site and it is awesome.

Our cat was just spayed last Wednesday, she had her check up and shots 10 days before surgery. She seemed fine the day she came home, and the next two days she hide in the closet. On Saturday her belly was really red and a clear liquid was coming out at the beginning of the incision. I called the vet but it being Thanksgiving they were closed, hoping that we could wait it out I did not call the the emergency number. Sunday morning I called, there was yellow pus oozing from the incision and we went to the vet. She was kept over night and given the same meds the first poster mentioned.

We brought her home today and she is looking and acting much better, she is eating a bit and will have to give her a pill twice daily for two weeks and have an antibiotic ointment to put on her belly.

Needless to say putting out another $250, in emergency vet care isn't something I was expecting. My question is do I have any recourse? The vet that did the surgery isn't on the clinic business card nor have I never heard or seen this vet before.

Any posts would be apprieciated.

It's difficult to say. Infection can set in with any major surgery like this, and it's hard to know if it was actually caused by something the vet did, or did not, do.

It's necessary to check incisions frequently, and take the animal back to the vet at any sign of infection - redness, swelling, oozing.. The fact that you waited so long is part of the problem and the vet would probably point that out.

I'm sorry your poor kitty had to go through this, but am glad she's feeling better!
