Love bird and plucking

Hi...

I know an older lady that has a Love bird that is 8 years old that has started to pluck his feathers on the top of his tail.

He did pluck his feathers in the fall and from what I gatther had stopped and now has started up again...

It's been 3 days now and he will not fly...he nose dives to the floor.

She stated that he is eating well and drinking good also. Still looking for attention/ being kuddly....

He/she has never had a mate. There has been no change in food. and the cage is still in the same place it's alway been...

Can anyone help?

Lisa

Love and attention, maybe a change of diet, and some new toys can distract him off his back.

Love Birds and Plucking

Thank you for your response...

Here is some more info I found on the Net from a lady that does bird rescues.

It's very informative...

Furry Angels

I wish there was a quick fix I could give you for your neighbor’s lovebird. Unfortunately, birds can pluck for a myriad of reasons (most of them originating in health problems). Plucking can be caused by some of the following problems: improper diet, bacterial/yeast infections, liver disease, heavy metal toxicity, parasites, depression, boredom, toxic/irritating substances on feathers, etc. As you can see, there are a lot of possibilities and no one medication could cover all of those.

If you go to ****** and punch in your location, you may be able to find an avian vet in your area. I would strongly recommend that this bird be seen by an avian vet right away to diagnose and treat the plucking. Plucking can be very difficult to cure but the likelihood of cure is much better if the bird is seen soon after it begins plucking. Over the counter sprays are NOT recommended. These are usually sold to treat external parasites and can cause more harm than good. If the bird did have parasites (which would be very unlikely if he/she is an indoor bird) a veterinarian would have to prescribe proper prescription treatment to cure that problem.

Also, the fact that he isn’t flying is very concerning and indicates a health problem. Please recommend to her that he be seen right away.
