Lewis put down today.

Hi all.....Today I had to put my 18 year old little panther Lewis down. He was fine about a month ago. Sure he couldn't jump as high or run around as much as he used to...but he always greeted me at the door when I came home from work. I have no children so to me it was the same as having a kid run to me yelling mommy mommy your home....all of a sudden he started losing so much weight. It happend so fast. Then he stopped eating and going to the bathroom. He wouldn't walk around anymore just lie there in a little black ball. He was my little panther....what a great hunter he was. He would cuddle up so tight and so close...if he could he would get inside you. When we brought him to the vet today he knew. My husband and I were crying our eyes out and we could tell just in the way he looked at us that he was ready. Like he was saying "I've had a long and happy life with you,but now I'm ready to go on to my next journey without you."

Funny but after he passed on.. I feel like I can hear his thoughts...Telling me that he's very happy and that his passing was a wonderful and joyus experience. I know that this is my brains way of dealing with it. But I feel him in my thoughts. Maybe I'm experiencing temporary insanity. Has anyone else ever felt this feeling? I even asked him to come and visit me if he can. Told him his spirit can come home with us again.

I can't say goodbye!!! I can't let him go!!!!

Thank you so much all for letting me share.

I am so sorry for your loss. Lewis must have been a kitty? I too lost my Mookie 2 weeks ago at 20 years old. She started to fade away quickly - i knew she was ill, but it just happened so quick.

Grief affects us all very differently. I have dreams about pets that have passed . In my dream, i go about a normal day - and my pet is always in my dream doing what it always did when it was here on earth. This just came to me, but maybe it is a sign from my deceased saying "I'm still there with you." ?? Could be, i don't know.

Just be sure to take the time to grieve. There are many stages you'll go through, but it just takes time.

No. You are grieving for the loss of a very old and very dear friend, and it's never easy.

I had the same feeling from my 20 year old cat when his time came. I"m sure you're right and he was ready, but that doesn't lessen our pain.

I"m very sorry for your loss.

R.I.P. little panther.

I am so sorry, and this certainly hits home for me, as my guy will be 18 in the spring, and everyone thought he looked like a baby panther!
Your post has brought tears to my eyes, as I know I will feel as big a loss as you when my time comes to deal with it.
But you can feel comfort in knowing that you have given him a long wonderful life and I know he is truly grateful to you and your husband for that.
He's in a better place now, where he can run, jump and play like a kitten

RIP sweet kitty.

This is for Lewis's mom and to all of us who has lost our furry children.

I received this when my Stray had been put to sleep due to cancer.
Still makes me cry.

IF I SHOULD GROW FRAIL

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain does keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done
for this - the last battle -can't be won.

You will be sad I understand
But don't let grief then stay your hand.
For on this day, more than the rest
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.

Take me to where my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't grieve that it must now be you
Who has to decide this thing to do.
We've been so close - we two -these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

White Phoenix, sorry for the loss of your panther:sad:
You are definetly not insane,we all deal with our grief in different ways.
When my 19yr old Sammy passed, also a beautiful black cat,I used to see him in his favourite spot, used to hear him meow, although he was no longer with me.
They are small in stature, but take up a large space in our hearts, but the kindest thing we can do for the animals we love,is to let them go when life is nothing but pain and remember all the wonderful years you had together:love:
