safe chewing?

I posted another question on the training thread, and this one is somewhat related.
I have an older Husky, who two days ago had surgery on his gums for some benign tumors. He has recovered very nicely - already back to his old self - and is in otherwise in excellent health for an old guy. Except now he really wants to chew, probably to ease the discomfort of his healing gums. I am going to call our vet tomorrow for advice, but in the meantime, does anyone know of a safe, soft object he may be able to "gum" on? I want to try a sock, but he'd been trained not to chew on socks (had a problem with this as a pup, don't want to bring it back). I can't think of anything else that may be safe. Any suggestions? Do you have a rope tug lying around? If so, soak it in water, toss it in the freezer and give it to him in the morning. Works great for teething puppies and since your old guy probably has sore gums, it may work well for him too.

I read of a cool idea I'll try next time I have a teething puppy. Make icecubs, or ice in those little waxed cups but add some tiny bits of treats, like bits of fruit & veg, or cheese. Or add a little boullion to the water.
