Cone of Shame

When I got my cat six years ago, (he has since passed), he was neutered by the SPCA before I got him. He came home with no meds or cone collar. He had only been neutered a day or two before I got him. My new cat was neutered on Wednesday and I was told he needs to wear the cone for a week. Why such a difference in aftercare? Does he really need the cone at this point?

I would say its worth it because every cat or dog is different in how they deal with stitches. If you put it on and they don't seem bothered with licking or biting the stitches then I guess you could remove it. However I would only do that while supervising them. They can be pretty sneaky and get to the incision and lick lick lick!. How does yours seem? bothered or not?

He does try to lick things when the cone comes off but he licks his entire body to clean himself. He has no stitches. They used glue to close up the tiny incisions. I haven't given him a chance to not lick. As soon as he gets anywhere near the site, I put the cone back on.

I think as long as you're there to oversee that the kitty doesn't try to rip the stitches there is no need of a cone however if there is insistence in doing so is better to put it on for his own good. My latest experiences with neutering males had no need of a cone but one of the females had to use it for 2 days.
