Angry MEET JULY (Not for squeemish)

I though this forum had a section for 'rants'. Please allow me to indulge myself .....

"Hey out there - the one who moved on July 1st somewhere around Jervis Bay area in Pointe Claire. I think you forgot your little cat. I guess you thought that she was so cute that someone would take her in. Guess what, no one did - not until today, July 16th. You see, Scumbag, your 'cute little kitty' was too frightened to approach people for food, and she had no hunting skills. So today your little darling finally crawled into someone's yard and collapsed. All 2 lbs of her! All the vets were closed when a young man found her, and none of the shelters were taking calls. I just happened to be passing through my kitchen when the phone rang.

HERE'S A PICTURE OF YOUR SWEET LITTLE DARLING. I don't know if she's going to make it through the night, but I've made her as comfortable as I can and am trying to force minute drops of fluid into her mouth every hour (it's going to be a l---o----n---g night! Why don't you come and help me ? I'm sure she'd just love to see you through her sunken eyes (that is, if she can still see).

And you know what else, you she can still purr through the haze and pain of complete dehydration and starvation. If she doesn't make it through the night, she will not be alone - I will stay with her and curse you with every fiber of my being! May a similar fate befall you one day and NO ONE will hear you call out!"

End of rant ......

I have called this poor soul July (for obvious reasons). I called my vet and really, there is nothing to do but wait or go to the DMV to have her put down. I have a feeling she still has a tiny wee bit of life in her. I want to give her until morning to see if there is hope. Our little group doesn't have the funds to pay for an emergency call on a Saturday night, so all I can do right now is keep her comfortable (which she is).

Say a prayer, my friends, for this poor sweet soul and that her 'dumper' suffers the pain of the damned!

When we had our little shelter, we had saline and syringes for hydration. I no longer have this equipment or I would have done it myself. All I have are tiny 1 cc syringes and bottled water. I would have to inject her 60 times to get a good dose into her.

I just checked on her and she sat up when I opened the door. She teetered over to me when I opened the cage, but was not happy about getting her tiny drop of food (mixture of cat milk, wet food and water). Second drop came right back out of her mouth.

I have decided to call my vet in the a.m. to bring her in and put the emergency charge on our account. I think this gal wants to live.

I have never seen anything so skinny - only bone and fur. No meat whatsoever. It is like holding a furry skeleton. She still has the strength to resist the feeding syringe though.

UPDATE (9:00 am)

July made it through the night. In desperation, I opened a can of Pate de Foie (liver pate) and diluted it with water. She got one whiff of it and ate a couple of mouthfuls on her own. I left the mixture in her cage at 2:00 am and it looks like she ate a bit more over the next couple of hours. She was sitting up in the cage this morning and I am taking her to our vet at 10:00 am.

To those of you who were online when I posted, thank you for your prayers and pm's of moral support. The next step (and decision) will be up to our vet and July's will to live.

Hopefully she'll make it...but if she just slips away over the bridge, she has a loving soul helping her cross, thank you for being her guardian angel

I also did not read the other posts out of fear having to take a glimpse at this poor little girl, but I see now she made it through the night.
Hopefully the starvation and dehydration has not damaged her internal organs.
Animals have an amazing will to survive and I am hoping with all my being, she will find the strenght..
I assume the picture is gruesome, but she could probably be the poster-cat for all abandonned July-move kitties, with her story told in the news.

This is one of the things that makes me want to reach through the monitor and (insert worst thing you can think of, something even worse, and then the worst thing ever x2) to this person who starved this poor cat.

I hope she is okay..

What does DMV stand for exactly?

Let us know what the vet says Please

I'm so glad she made it through the night I hope she wasn't suffering any pain but from the looks of her picture there is little of anything left of this poor cat.

Drs de Medecine Veterinaire. It's an emergency clinic here in Montreal that is FULLY equipped. If your vet needs elaborate tests done, you go to the DMV. There are specialists, surgeons, and even a dentist. It's expensive though, so people with real emergencies tend not to go even though they really should. You get what you pay for too- the service there is incredible.

The DMV is also very rescue friendly and will do the bare minimum to an animal brought in so that costs can be minimized to the rescue. They will show you how to do things at home properly to reduce hospital care time. Many of the vet techs will also offer to take an animal home for a few days in order to help them over the crisis time.

I wish the previous owners actually did find this site to see what became of their cat but they probably have convinced themselves that somebody took her in – much sooner.

Prayers.

Maybe someone can inform SOS Meow of the rescue assistance the emerg provides, it doesn't seem like she was familiar and didn't think she could afford this.

This is a horrible example of neglect - poor littler July!!

I wonder if you can somehow get donations for her care - what about an article in the Gazette or La Presse, somewhere? Are there smaller newspapers on the west island- adverstisers that may be in need of copy. Wtrite an article yourself and give it to them - they may use it. Summer is quiet time for newspapers.

Is she at the vet now? (I hope!!) getting the care she needs. Surekly, any vet would help in this case. Lucky and Debbie seemed to have found great vets in Mtl - they MUST exist!!

I'll keep thinking good thoughts and pray she makes it.

And I did not see any foul language - tho I myself thought of some. Maybe I can do it in French? Or Gaelic?

Oh, this is gut-wrenching. My prayers and postive thoughts go out to this poor little girl.
For the despicable creeps who did this - one word.
Karma.

Update on July

First, thank you for all your support and caring comments.

Our vet met me at her clinic at 10:00 am this morning and actually expressed a look of shock when she saw the state that this poor creature is in. She is a full-grown adult around 3-5 yrs old and weighs 3.8 lbs (the equivalent of a 3.5 month old kitten). This is an adult female that has very long legs, long tail and long body (what's left of it).

A very thorough examination came up with the following:
One very small kidney/one somewhat small kidney.
Good heart rate.
Slightly below normal temperature.
Very white gums.
High level of dehydration to the point where her eyes are so deeply recessed that bodily fluids had leaked out through the sockets (hold on to your lunch, ladies).

(At this point, due to her extreme condition, blood tests would be inconclusive, but the vet hopes July will be around to have them done sometime next week to determine the extent of any kidney damage. This is assuming that she is only suffering from malnutrition/dehydration and not something else completely).

All evening (until 2:00 am), I had been force-feeding her a mixture of cat milk, soft food and water. It was always an effort, and the most I could get into her each time was approx 2 ml's. Anything more than that (i.e., a second squirt of the syrings), and she would clench her teeth and let is run back out of her mouth. However, in desperation, I opened a tin of Paris Pate and she dove into it and ate two small bites on her own! No diahrea or vomiting and there was a small urine mark in her litter box (about the size of a quarter) this morning.

I gave the entire story to the vet, and following her examination, asked what the prognosis is for her. Because our vet knows our budget is not very big for other than standard medical care (i.e., vaccinations, sterilization, etc)., she said that there is a chance July will make it and, after giving her 100 cc's hydration and a shot of antibiotics, sent me home all equipped to treat her myself. (Must do some fundraising, as today cost me over $150 and if she makes it to Wednesday or Thursday, we are looking at blood tests).

July will be getting 100 cc's hydro twice a day in two different locations (very difficult, as her skin is attached to her bones), and antibiotics once a day. Back to the messy force-feeding as well.

I have spent most of the day in the garage with her (I had to clean out the clutter from having moved myself in June), and she is resting comfortably. Every so often, she gets up and wobbles to the door of the cage and purrs. After approx. 60 seconds of activity, she needs to rest.

July is not out of the woods yet. Force-feeding is a major battle, and it's not going to be easy to insert the tube for hydration.

Believe me when I say that the pictures make her look better than she does in person (if she is standing and you look down on her, she is about 1" wide between her loins). I am going to put a write-up on our website with more pix and will most certainly do an article for the local papers.

July is absolutely filthy; she must have slept in gardens/hedges, and even though I have tried to sponge her face and body, she is full of grime. I'm sure she was a beautiful cat before this ordeal.

Keep praying ......

I'm so glad that she's come along this far. Great that the vet gave you more to take with you and treat her at home.

Maybe the man that found her can help you with her, he seemed like a genuinely kind fellow

Good news. Please keep us updated.

Does the vet provide any 'special' rates for your rescue?

Yes, our vet does 'subsidize' our rates for us. In fact, she has often gone 'above & beyond' the call of duty to help us out in a pinch and has never pressured for payment.

We recently had a Pet Fair at her clinic and SOS MIOW was the only non-profit rescue who helped with the organization (flyers, soliciting for sponsorship, issuing press releases, etc). When all was said and done, the surplus will be given to SOS MIOW to help us continue our work.

Cases like this one (little July) are what real rescue is all about. If that poor little creature had not purred or shown a scrap of will to live, the decision would probably have been made to humanely put her down and save our monetary resources for others in need. I have never been one to go overboard on any one particular rescue (keeping in mind that there are hundreds & thousands out there suffering); however, this sweet creature is the epitome of what the July 1st moving madness is all about re pet abandonment.

I will document her progress and continue to take photos as she, hopefully, improves. I can honestly say that she is not suffering, she is comfortable and resting, hopefully regaining her strength. July had her second dose of 100 cc's of saline this evening and her antibiotic.

It is now 1:15 am and she has used her litter box to urinate. She is lying on her side, breathing steadily. Strange, but she has never closed her eyes.

Sorry if I don't report too often, I am also helping the lady with 29 cats to place (see topic on DDO lady), and giving on-line support to a foster mother who has taken Ziggy.

Keep praying ladies ...... the next 24 hours are crucial.

SOS Miow,Thank's for the update,July obviously has a fighting spirit and so do her caretakers, hopefully it's only up hill from now on,she sooo deserves a chance,as do all poor abandonned July cats..
We once discussed why giving animals to students in temporary livingquarters is a no-no for most shelters and July is a very typical example.
The people who did this to her,if they were students, will probably get another cat come September...a cute little kitten is soo much fun especially if you live away from home.
I am assuming this is what happened to July....but don't jump down my throat,I am sure there are responsible students too.
