Our new cat Ferox

I have picked out the name for the cat I caught last night. Here are some pictures..... Will be bringing him to the vet soon....... James said hopefully he is tame enough by next week, so we can atleast get him into a smaller crate to bring him in.

Holy smokes--he looks like he's been through a few battles doesn't he? Hopefully the vet can fix his health and you can fix his heart

What an angel you are! You have a heart of gold! Where is the cat at now? Are you going to make him an inside cat or outside?

Whatever the outcome of the vet visit, at least this POOR POOR baby's suffering is ended.

Everyone who sees no need to neuter their cats should see this.

We are going to have him in the crate for a couple of days. That way he won't go hide, and he can see us all the time. It is a very large crate. I could easily fit into it and still have some room left over. We are keeping him an indoor cat. Don't want him running loose in the busy area we live in.

Happycats- thanks for the suggestion of the name. Hubby doesn't know about it, but I will let him name the one kitty he saw when we catch it. That one is a tortiseshell and the third one looks kinda like Ferox, but smaller, and has a white ring on her tail. I think that one is female, and may be having a litter..... I hope I catch her before then, if that is the case. I don't want those kittins out in the cold.

I think Ferox was just very frightened last night when I caught him. I was just in there, and was able to stick my fingers into the cage and put a treat in there. My fingers was within an inch from his face, and all he did was watch. No hissing, no nothing.... Maybe he realizes that I am here to help him.... I sure hope so.....

Does he let you handle him??? He is obviously hurt  I hope not too badly..
I bet he's beautiful once he gets cleaned up and healed...

Awwwww Lilith, you are truly an angel, look at the poor little soul He looks like hes been through so much, I'm glad to hear he is calming down a little, it will probably take time for him to trust you but sounds like he already is starting to. Its really heartbreaking to see him wounded, thanks for giving him a chance

Chico, I haven't yet tried to pet him..... I want him to get used to us before we take it to that step. I will try petting him in a couple of days, if I think he is ready to. He's already letting me get right next to him, by the cage, and I can stick my fingers in there to put a treat by him. So I think he will be ready for the vet next week. I am sure he needs many shots.... good thing the vet here caters to military and gives us discounts on everything. I guess the most a shot costs is $15 compared to $30 at other ones we have been to.

I have always had a thing for animals. Growing up, we always had stray cats in our yard, and I would go out and feed them everyday... at one time, I wanted to be a vet, when I was 16 a marine biologist.... went to college for virtual reality.... too much computers, and I had to have so much math knowlege So I decided it wasn't for me. Now I am a homemaker......I think I may look into being a vet again..... it is something I always thought about, even when I was really little.

Good for you Lilith, I'm sure you would make an excellent vet, it was always my dream to have a career working with animals but life seemed to get in the way and looking back I wish I would have done what I really wanted to do, now that I'm 38 I feel that its too late to start schooling, so dont make the same mistake I did and go for your dreams, believe me I kick myself everday for not doing what I know in my heart I was really meant to do

Wow, that poor baby looks like he has been theu hell and back!! It's great that you have taken him in. He is probably terrified and it takes time a patience with ferals - he may have been a pet turned feral. (If only these guys could talk!) One of those injuries looks like it needs help asap - if only you could somehow help him. What if the two of you tried? Lock the door and cover your arms and face. It may spook him but I worry about infection. Alternately - if you are not willing to get battle scars, do you have any of those long swabs - the kind we use at the hospital? You could certainly use that to get some anti infection cream or something on that wound. Or you could make one and try that - it all might spook him I know and it is bound to hurt. It's too bad you cannot get to the vet till later. The vet could do it all when the cat is under and being neutered. No muss or fuss.

Thx for taking in this poor biy and good luck!

I really wish we coud get him in sooner, but the vet we are going to has acutally vets there every other week, the rest are all nurses. Pus it is the only vet around where the prices won't kill our budget. So I am making an appointment first thing tomorrow morning. I have to get the number to the vet from a friend tonight, when he's back from work.

Can you call the vet and the nurses and have them talk you through helping that wound. It is the kind of wound that would be seen as an emergency. Is it oozing anything? Is he scratching or licking it? (That's prob a stupid question, sigh) I wonder about trying to get at least gauze on it - maybe you and your husband? Or a friend? Put on large gloves and a heavy long sleeve blouse you do not mind having scratched.

The other side of that is that itis always better to have the vet do it if you want this cat to associate you with only positive things. But when you are trying to help him, that is not always possible. Karin might know - having worked with injured animals.

What about even the vet techs where you do? If you bring him there, could they help? It wouold save waiting for the vet? I've heard placing a blanket over the cage might make him less stressed. You could try that. Then, he'd think he had his own little enclosure.

Chico,

The vet here doesn't work that way. He, himself is a soldier, and has to supply service for many bases in Maryland. So he would have to travel far, just to get here. I am going to keep a close eye on his wound, and if it looks worse, we will go to the one we went with Cano, and spend the money. It isn't as bad as it looks. What you guys see is just blood smeared on his fur.... I can't actually see a cut or scrape.... and there is no fur missing.

Lilith,I did not mean to be pushy, you have our little angel Judith and money does unfortunately not grow on trees Just do your best...you've done wonders just by taking him in
Cat-bites can be very dangerous,I know from experience....if you could get some antibiotic creme on him without handling him would be great...

I don't mean to sound pushy either and I really congratulate you for doing what you can for this kitty. That would - or what looks like a wound - has me concerned. And I dare say it is hard for anyone to know whether he has more severe wounds until you examine him and that has been difficult.

The feral colony my grandmother used to care for used to have the most ungodly injuries, especially the Toms because they'd fight. It took all of her nursing expertise to get them back to good health. This fellow reminds me of one of those Toms after a bad fight.

Omg, those pictures were so hard to look at. I just keep thinking of what he'll look like when he's healed, clean and fed properly. That poor baby!!
Thanks for giving him a chance, it looks like he would not have lasted much longer.

Cyberkitten, great idea about the blanket. I will talk to James about it... and I don't think you were being pushy either...

Chico, I didn't think you were being pushy. I really wish we did have more money than we do... then I would not have to worry about where to go to have him checked out, and shots given. But to get all that done in one visit would cost a fortune else where.

James and I have to go shopping tonight, so I will get anti-biotics, gauze and heavy gloves, and as far as a shrit, I wi just layer up on my od sweaters, and put something over my legs. And we will get Ferox into the vet as soon as we can. James is really hoping next week.

Thanks everyone, you al have been so great.
