Dog food conundrum...
Good evening all! I am in a bit of a pickle...hubby and I are in a bit of a disagreement with what to feed the dog.
I currently feed 'his royal majesty' Natural Balance Venison and Sweet Potatoe formula, as he is prone to ear infections. I used to feed him Iams, until I came to this forum, and learned how bad most dog food it Anyway, Mocha enjoys his Natural Balance, and things are good. I bake him his cookies, and make him homemade liver treats, just so I know exactly what he is eating. Well, tonight, hubby was giving Mocha his 'breakfast', and told me that Mocha didn't like the food and that there was no reason to spend the extra money on this food because he didn't think it was helping the dog's ears. So I told him I could always start Mocha on RAW. Well , that idea is right out of the question, apparently. So, to ease my curiosity, I asked him what he would prefer we feed the dog. And the answer will not shock a lot of you. "Stuff you can get at the grocery store. Or Eukanuba. I had Boxers before, and it was great for them". Oh boy... Kris wants to get boxers when we buy a real house, not a condo. I've noticed that most of the breeders around this area are feeding their dogs RAW, which is awesome. However, Kris is pretty stubborn and close-minded about feeding more holisitically. I didn't tell him that we would have to feed the new dogs raw though....I'm kind of afraid of the reaction I'd get... So, the question I pose to all of you gurus out there is this: I need to really research this subject (it's the only way he'll listen to me), and I'm looking for some books and websites that I can reference. Does anyone have any good ideas? I'm going to make up a 'book' for him to read (I know that sounds dumb, but like I said before, it's the only way he'll consider what I'm telling him). I'm going to put in a lot of the threads here as well, because there's a lot of excellent information here. Thanks a million guys. I really appreciate your help!!

Two books I really enjoyed were these two
http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=DN208 & http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=DN230 I've also heard great things about this http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=DN157 Now I may not totally agree with the diets they use in the books (Barf, veggies & supplements) but the whole idea behind them I support totally. The first book was very easy to read. Written more on a personal level, like your friend was talking to you. Actually, i believe Carina Beth MacDonald who wrote the first one, posted on this forum at one point. The 2nd gets into he nitty gritty, about health issues our dogs face, like dental disease, heart disease and how a raw diet helps. I totally recomend them for anyone wanting to get into raw. There seems to be two ways to feed a raw diet. The Barf method, where you measure everything perfectly, supplement and mix and grind. Then there is the the prey model way. You give your dog a fish. You give your dog a slab of beef. You give your dog half a chicken. Much simpler.

Wow!! Thanks guys!! I'm excited about starting to be able to educate Kris in the ways of dog food. I think with him, it's a fear of the unknown. He's under the impression, as I was not too long ago, that if dog food was available in the grocery store, that it had to be good to feed to your dog .
Like I said before, he's pretty stubborn when it comes to change. I'm hoping that I can arm myself with information, so that I can prove to him that feeding your dog raw is not only the best that you can do for their health, but it's not as time consuming or as expensive as it sounds. I thought at first that raw feeding would be terribly time consuming, but it's really not (even though I'm not 'allowed' to feed Mocha raw; so I picked what looked like the best kibble I could feed him). I'm going to go to work on my 'book' today, and maybe post it here so newcomers can have a bit of information on pet food. Again, thank you everyone, and I'll keep you posted on the 'battle'

Good luck.
No doubt its a overwhelming at first. The whole, am I doing this right comes into play. But you just have to step back, and realize how simple mother nature makes it. Wolf kills animal. Wolf eats animal. All you have to do is give the raw meat to the dog and he'll do the rest

I say you have to challenge you hubby and tickle his brain, let him come to his own conclusions.
-what do 99% of the planet's carnivores eat? -what did cats and dogs eat before the "invention" of kibble some mere 60 years ago? remember, cats and dogs have been around since before man! -what do cats and dogs eat in most countries of the world, ie africa, south america, asia, etc - where there is no dry dog food? -look up ann martin's article on how petfood is made, what's in grocery-store brands, etc. make him realise that if he thinks hot-dogs are gross, dare him to eat a bowl of kibble! -show him dog anatomy charts, such as http://www.geocities.com/havens_home/feedraw.htm - look at the skulls, teeth, digestive systems, etc. he'll come around... you'll find a way
