How long can I crate?

We adopted a 2 yr old terripooh last week. He is an absolute doll. He crates well at night. We both work from home so we have only crated him for a couple of hours here and there during the day. We have a day trip planned to a theme park in a few weeks and were wondering what is an acceptable length of time to crate an adult dog for ocassional days. We are new to our neighborhood and don't have anyone we trust to let him out during the day.

I know people who regularly crate 8-10 hours a day (I'm not advocating this, but it's not uncommon.) I bet that would be just fine, especially if he got a bit worn out before you go so he sleeps more!
