sick puppy

I have a sick mini dachaund at home he is 8 months old. We have been to the vet several times in the past week. All of his blood work came back fine but the vet can not put his finger on to what is wrong with him. He is tired all the time.....not playful and really isnt drinking or eating that much at first he was throwing up and had a fever of 104 but that has all stoped. Today is his last day on antibotics. Just wondering if anyone had advise for me. This is my baby and I want him to get better. All he has been doing is sleeping.

Thanks!
September

Puppies can be sick and you can sometimes never know why. This dog obviously weaned from it's mother way too young which could be one of the problems.

Where did you get the pup? A breeder or pet store? Did you contact them?

You'll need to establish some healthy bacteria in your dogs GI tract again, so add some yogurt to the diet. A teaspoon a couple times a day (plain) yogurt at this age is fine.

What do you feed this puppy? And I would love to see a picture.

Duudley is 8 months old and I didnt get him from a breeder. He has had all of his shots and was doing wonderful a few weeks ago until we took him camping with us. I wonder if he ate something bad......my poor baby! He is eating Canine ID right now....the vet wanted him on a blan diet for a bit. I dont have a pic. If I did I would send it to ya!

I'm sorry I must have misread the initial post, I thought you said 8 weeks (sorry bout that)
So where did you get the little boy from?

Camping enviroment can definitely expose your dogs to things such as lyme disease, fluke and other parasites from water, leptosporosis and such.

Did your vet do a CBC blood work up on the pup yet? It may be a good idea as well as stool CULTURE and PARASITOLOGY testing a week after finishing the antibiotics. Any tests performed while the antibiotics are still in the system will show a false negative.

Ofcourse if the pup is improving you may want to just wait to see how things go, but if you are concerned a few little tests can ease your mind.

Lyme Titer being one of them.

Pls give Duddley a hug!

The blood was normal?

Yogurt contains healthy bacteria that the antibiotics would have killed.

I would give some plain yogurt a couple times a day in between feedings. You have a small dog so one tablespoon 2x a day should be good enough.

I bought him from a guy who was selling them on the side of the road. He had shot records and all....or course he was only six weeks when I got him.

Luba/Goldenmom - it is more common than you think. I recall in my days when I was more serious about horse showing going to the "big" shows (mostly in the US) and people always had litters of puppies for sale. The reason - they sell. And yes, I also know many people who bought them only to lose them to illness since these young puppies are being brought to these areas without all their proper shots. I have also seen puppies sold at flea markets, etc. Not recommending it and not defending it but it does happen - a lot!

September, I hope your pup is doing better. Poor little guy! I'm glad he found a good home with you!!

BYB's making a small fortune off of tender hearted people.

They'd go out of business if people stopped buying from them. So sad!

Thanks for all your support! Im taking him in the morning to a new vet to get a second opinon. He has been fine since day one.....my BABY...hehe.. He is a wonderful dog and I assume that he has a bug of some sort. He has all his shots and has been to the vet for every shot plus heartworm pills. I think he got a hold of something when we were camping Memorial Day Weekend. He a curious dog so there is no telling what he got into. He also has a new brother...4 month old Brody....he's an Akita. We had to drive to Oklahoma to get him and he loves his little brother Duddley! I will keep you posted and let you all know how my little boy is doing

Yes, I've seen litters of puppies being peddled at flea markets too.

September, you now have two male dogs. Doxies can be very feisty, and Akitas can be aggressive to other dogs. Be careful with them as they mature, and never leave them alone together if no one is home. Even a small quarrel could be fatal for your Doxie, because of the size difference.

Hope little Dudley is feeling better soon!!
