Young dog with penis problem.
I have a 15 month-old male yorkie-poo in good health. For the last two days, I've noticed the head of his penis does not retract completely. The very tip is still visible and the area around it (where it comes out) looks a little puffy/swollen. He sometimes seems to urgently have to pee and has had a couple accidents.
Does anyone know what may be causing this? Bladder infection maybe? If so, what's the treatment for that? Any insight will be appreciated. Thanks for your help! GalGolfer |

When my female had a uti I took a urine sample to the vet, it was tested, I got a course of antibiotics and was told to feed a half cup of active bacteria yogurt for 2 weeks. Look to see if there are drops of blood in his urine if he's having accidents in the house. I've never had a male though, so I don't have advice about penis'.

You need to take him to the vet. If the sheath is too tight and the penis cannot retract properly, there can be urinary and other problems.
This can be a genetic defect or caused by trauma, but only a vet can tell you for sure. |

He did experience a little trauma ...
I did bring him to PetSmart on Friday to get him bathed, groomed, nails clipped, etc. It was his first time at a 'professional' and he was very nervous -- shaking, panting very hard, etc. He did fine for the most part, but they did have a difficult clipping his front nails. He seems fine demeanor-wise ... I just noticed this 'problem' yesterday. Could trauma of this nature be the cause? Either way, I will call my vet tomorrow morning and bring him in. Thanks so much.

One more question ...
Could it possibly be irritation from the shampoo they used at the groomer? Just another thought I had. Seems coincidental that the problem began occurring just after the visit to be groomed.
Thanks again, GalGolfer |

Yes, neutered
He was neutered in August of last year. I plan on bringing him in tomorrow.

Sorry! By "trauma", I meant the physical kind - any injury that might cause any scarring and consequent constrictions.
