Old dog goes in the house...ideas?

Hello!
My good dog, Mic, is 12 years old now and has been having a problem with pooping in house for almost a year. He has no issues with urine, but seems to not know when he is going to poop until it is too late. He'll just be walking through the house and start going... I mentioned it to the vet at his last check up and she had no ideas or advice. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem with an older pet. His poop is formed and not like diarrhea and he eats sleeps, plays well, doesn't seem to be in pain or anything. He is a collie/husky/shepherd mix, about 60 pounds which is a nice healthy weight for him. He has mild hip dysplasia in one hip and has had knee surgery on both knees for torn ligaments. He has always been indoors with full run of the house, but now we keep him in our (very large) master bathroom if we are out, to save on the carpets... We did have a new baby 4 months ago(our second), but he was doing this before she was born, so I don't know what's up with him. I would be grateful for any suggestions or comments...
Thanks,
Sally

Does he always poo around the same time? We know when our dogs need to go as we feed them at the same times everyday and they usually go twice around the same time. It would be an idea to put him out in the garden or take him for his walks at a certain time.
Not sure what else to do, we have not experienced anything like this. The vet should have more suggestions, maybe a bowel problem or something.
Good luck anyway!

Thanks for the reply! Nope, it isn't the same time every day. Usually it's in the evening after he eats which makes sense, but yesterday it was about an hour before his dinnertime. I work part time and on the days I work he has no problem holding it until we get home, but when we are home... I think it might be due to activity, so I'm going to try getting outside with him and throwing his frisbee every day so he has to run for it and see if that helps move things along more predictably.
Thanks,
Sally
