House Warming Gift
I am going to a house warming party tomorrow night, I am not too sure what to give them. (Hubby's friends) The lady is a doctor and the guy is a computer programmer.
No gift certificates...hubby frowned on it since he thinks they are boaring and impersonal. They are not drinkers....so no bottles of wine and champagne I was thinking of a cordless phone....(But I am sure they have one already) Any ideas? |

How about some nice picture frames, or a vase, or even some decoretive candles?
I think those are nice housewarming gifts.

I would stick with low maintenance plants ~ either house or yard. They have more than decent salaries so picking out goodies for the house might not be to their taste or your budget An interesting plant requires little from them and is a living reminder ( do buy a low maintenance one though !!) of your thoughtfulness.

Since we have everything we need,I would love if someone gave me a plant,or even a little tree, something that would be with me forever,a nice vase,or a pictureframe is a good idea too.
I am sure they have all the phones they need already..

I like all your ideas...but I have couple of problems...
With a picture frame, I don't know what colour to give them. I don't know if their furniture is wood or glass. They bought a condo, can't give them a tree. Keep the ideas coming! |

A houseplant in a nice ceramic container. Pothos are hard to kill, can survive with little light and don't "shed".

A nice tray with scented candles is always welcome in my house

With the house warming gifts we received the one I really enjoyed (because I love my garden) was a galvanized bucket loaded with tulip and daffodil bulbs. Sometimes when I wander around one of the garden shops here (usually Featherfields) I can see so many things I would love to have but just never buy for myself.

I've always wanted an extension ladder...but I suppose they wouldn't need one for a condo...
no, seriously...ladders are very useful things! I'd really like one, so don't laugh... How about an elegant welcome mat? I've seen some really beautiful ones and if they didn't care for the design, they could still put it to use since it would be outside...

I think food gifts are always nice. My son spent a weekend with the parents of a girl he was seeing and we went to Marshall's and bought a basket, jams, cookies, coffee etc. He gave them that as a hostess gift and they loved it. We kept it to a breakfast theme. But you could do grilling spices and few utensils for the grill--that sort of thing. Or a cookbook and 2 aprons.
I love candles and picture frames but I know people who don't. And I hate getting knick knacks, or things that don't match my house. I wind up putting them in the basement waiting for a garage sale. Coffee table books can make a nice gift if there's a hobby or interest you know they like. And there are some very nice ones, for reasonable prices in Barnes and Noble. I've gotten charms for wine glasses and liked that. I know they're not drinkers but if they serve wine they might appreciate that. If you put something like that in a gift bag with a package or two of pretty paper cocktail napkins, that makes a nice little gift. And it's not something that you have to worry about them thinking "What am I supposed to do with this?" The napkins are always nice to have on hand when you're entertaining. |

african violet in a self watering pot. make sure its near a south facing window but out of direct sunlight. tell them to keep it watered from the bottom (in other words dont get the leaves wet). repot every few years. if its a really bright room it doesnt need to be near a window.

I know it's too late to make a suggestion now, but what I love to give people who have or can buy whatever they want is a simple hummingbird feeder. To make it a nicer gift, add a book on hummingbirds, and maybe even some binoculers. I have three of them and would love a fourth! It's a gift of simple pleasure.

Glasslass,I agree,I am an avid birdwatcher, books on birds, feeders etc...are to me the best gifts..
Too often you get gifts with no thought behind them,my son and his GF visiting us from Alberta, bought me a beautiful Birdfeeder(not that I needed one more )but it was the best gift ever. But these people I believe are in a condo..
