Unhappy RIP Jake

Our family pet of 14 years, Jake, suffered a stroke last night and was PTS this morning.

He showed up on our doorstep as a year old pup, when I was just a young teenager, and about 5 months after our beloved Golden Retriever had passed away. It was like he knew we needed another dog in our lives. My sister and I gave him some treats before we got on the bus to go to school, and when we got home that afternoon, he was waiting for us in the front yard. He didn't leave after that, even though we tried to find his previous owners.

He was always up for anything- biking and hiking, and anything to do with winter sports. I brought him up to a fishing lodge with me for an entire summer, and he was pretty much in heaven up there.... even chased some bears out of camp a couple times! He also had the most hillarious habit of howling whenever he heard a train whistle. My parents joked that he was a hobo who found us by riding the rails!

Once I moved out of my parents house, I was sad to say goodbye to Jake- he was always "my" dog. But my parents provided a loving home for him these past few years.

I am comforted by my final memories of Jake- on this May long weekend, my entire family got together at our camp on Lake Superior. It was one of Jake's favourite places, roaming the beach or just laying on the deck and looking out at the lake. He had a great weekend with Molly and my sister's 2 dogs.

RIP Jake. You have been with me for half of my life and you will be dearly missed. Run free at the bridge big guy.

3 more pictures....
I even have a video of him and Molly playing last summer. It is something that I will be able to watch when I am missing him.

Oh what a gorgeous boy and oh what a wonderful life you and your family gave him. Boy, did he ever sit on the right lawn that day

So sorry for your painful loss. Yes, the video will fill some voids when you are missing him. Nice that he got to see the whole family before he left and that he did not suffer at all.
Jake...I am sure there are beaches at the bridge

thank you everyone for your kind words and wishes. It has been a tough day to say the least. I can't even imagine how my dad felt, having to take him to the vet this morning. I wrote up a nice "tribute" email and attached a bunch of pictures of Jake over the years and sent it to my family. My dad said it brought him to tears!!
I'll never forget you Jake

What a man. Very handsome. He chose his new family years ago. It seems he also chose his time to leave. He got his weekend with his favourite people so he could say goodbye. What a smart man he was indeed.
sweet Jake You will be sorely missed.

I'm so sorry for your loss, mollywog It's hard to let them go after such a long time--but if he hadn't found you, he likely wouldn't have had such a long time! He was a gorgeous boy and a good friend and now he's your watching over you!

Awww! Jake brings tears to my eyes!!! What a beautiful boy and I can see he has a beautiful personality to match!!! I'm so, so sorry for your loss! You gave him a great life!

I understand what your going through. In the past two months we've lost a guinea pig and our two 21 year old cats. The pain has eased, although I still have my moments.

I'm hoping the great memories of Jake will help you through this sad time!
