weird kitty behaviour

My cat of approximately 6 years old has been doing something odd and I wondered if anyone else has experienced this.

She goes upstairs into my bedroom and will grab an item of clothing within her reach, be it a sock, a shirt, or whatever happens to be out in the open. She grabs it in her mouth then goes down the stairs to the main floor and drops in usually in the kitchen. The other weird thing about it is, while she's doing this she makes this weird meowing sound, almost like she's hurt!! She does it when I'm at home and also when I'm not there. I often come home to find items of clothing on the kitchen and living room floors.

She's been doing this about a month now.

My cat does this..particually with one of her toys. She grabs it in her mouth and runs around my apartment, making this funny meow.

She's playing would be my guess. I have one who loves ear plugs. Well, all of them do. They are a great size to bat around. But TT in particular loves his plugs. He knows where I keep them for hubby and he goes and steals them. He walks around with them in his mouth like a little cigar meowling and crying. I keep saying he is talking to them. He is just super excited.
Unless anything else in her behaviour has changed and is indicating illness - loss of appetite, not using litter box, losing weight, etc, I would think she is just having some fun. If she is not spayed she could be in heat and suffering "spring fever". Would be a great time to get her fixed IF she isn't. Maybe missing you when you aren't home. Have you considered a playmate for her?

Sweet Pea does that, and has taught Jasper too. She carries her toys and meows really loud. When her kittens were still here, they used to go running to her and she would drop her toy at their feet. Maybe it is instinct to bring prey back and call her kittens???

Duffy does it only with one particluar toy mouse and only first thing in the morning if I'm still asleep and other attempts to wake me haven't worked in order to feed her on her time

My bunduk has done this since he was a little kitten. Does it at least 2/3 times a day - Im pretty sure its normal. He will use all his toys (and still some items that arent his as well!)

The meows they make when theyre carrying their item of choice really is pitiful!

NOTHING Bunduk does is "normal"

When I was growing up, I had a kitty (Sugar-calico) who would bring socks, underwear, the pillow out for guests...sometimes it was VERY embarassing. These guys carry their mice around in their mouths...they even chase each other carrying their mice...it's really cute

This was him brining me his toy when I was on the laptop on the 3rd floor. Beanie seal usually resides in the basement on one of the shelves in my bro's room. I think it was from my SIL when they were dating..has some sort of signifigance im unaware of. Ah well. Bunduk doesnt care about that

L4H has it right. Kittens learn that a special meow from momcat is a "look what I've caught" for you if she's caught a mouse or something. Over the years I have had outdoor cats that would always "call me" to show what they caught....mice, voles, birds, snakes, grasshoppers and one time a weasel. It seems to be instinctive with cats as male cats will do it too. My indoor cats would do the same with socks, etc. I like to think of it as a way they show their love, by bringing you a gift.

Oksana does this with one of her teaser things. If it's downstairs, she'll drag it upstairs in the middle of the night. I usually wake up when I hear it dragging, then she drops it and starts to meow. Then I call to her, she jumps on the bed and settles in to sleep. She'll do this also if it's upstairs. She'll bring it downstairs, then come to me to get a nice pet.

thanks for all the replies My cat also loves to play with her cat toys, I just find this clothing thing weird. The other day I had company over and she came meowing down the stairs with my bra! and yesterday it was my pajama bottoms! I just dont get what the clothing thing is about... toys, sure I can understand!! Guess I'm just going to have to stop leaving my stuff around!

And my cat has 2 other kitty playmates and, since I'm a responsible pet owner, all my cats are fixed

My cat has a facination with socks...there are no safe socks in the house. And just when I thought that the washing machine ate one sock, they mysteriously are found stashed away.
