Question cat urinates during deep sleep

Our cat is normal, happy, and healthy - except for when he is sleeping. He frequently has seizure-like full body spasms throughout the day, whenever he naps, and it is almost impossible to wake him up. It often appears as though he is running, except he is lying on his side and "galloping" in place. He began urinating during these episodes several months ago, and the problem has gotten progressively worse. We now have to shut him in the bathroom at night (which makes him very sad ) in order to prevent accidents from occurring throughout the apartment.

Our vet is stumped. Incontinence was ruled out when the prescribed medicatiion was ineffective at several dosages. His next inclination was that the problem is behavioral, but he has doubts about that since the cat doesn't urinate outside the litter box when awake. He told us about a behavioral consultant service that we could use, but it is very expensive. We're very willing to spend money to fix the problem, but at the same time we don't want waste money on a behavior-specific consultation if the problem doesn't seem to be related to behavior.

Any suggestions?
