All the puppies had what looked like rubber bands (some red some blue) wrapped around the base of all thier tails, they also looked like they were in a kiddie pool with no blankets or bedding of any kind.
Bigdoglover claimed it was a reputable breeder, yet when asked who the breeder is, bigdoglover skipped out!! IMO BYB!!!! how sick, especially for someone so highly "intelligent" "mensa" as Darcy claims to be, to be dumb enough to use a BYB!!! Takes all kinds I guess *sigh* those poor poor puppies

I didn't see the bands y'all were talking about! But I really DO have a friend here who is in Dobies and I mentioned this thread to her. She said she knows pretty much everyone who would have a three week old litter on the ground (serious breeders, that is) and couldn't think of anyone with a 3 week old rainbow litter

Yes, it's a shame how furious people get when you point out that they are patronizing a backyard breeder, instead of sticking around to be educated - especially someone who said others should be educated about this very subject. Oh well...when it comes down to "I want" anything can be rationalized. I really hope those puppies were just on that slick surface for purposes of taking pics. Puppies who are raised that way can become "swimmers". |

yeah sounds like the tails were being banded. i don't consider any person who bands tails a reputable breeder and have never heard of a breeder who shows dogs that would do that. none of the dobies we got breeders would do that, and my stepdad showed (not dobies) but he has never heard of a breeder that shows doing this either. I think it's an awful practice, i at least hope the puppies were only about a week old at the absolute most.
poor poor puppies.

sniffsniffsniffsniff.....yum yum. Karin I have a brother who is also waaaayyyyuh up there, intellect-wise. He'd probably find Mensa boring. He is a post graduate philosophy student, easing into being a professor, either at the university of Chicago, Toronto, or somewhere in Berlin. He went to Germany for 6 months once; the time he figured it would take him that long to learn German well enough to read Kant and Neitsche (sp) in the original text, and ditto Mexico in order to learn to read some of the South American philosophers. Now he goes back to both countries periodically to teach classes (in those languages) - he is such an academic but he is my little brother and I wuv him. I cannot imagine him being able to spend much time on internet forums!

Too bad we are not on speaking terms anymore. He built my computer which has issues, but most important, he would not let me stay with him in his concrete house for the hurricanes because of Ciara. This broke my heart. No games here, I'm proud of your brother too! Wanna trade? My brother is clueless in other areas, like family. I am proud of my brother but he leaves the entire family shaking their heads in wtf attitude. Internet play does not exist with him, does not even understand why we do it. Go figure?

Luckily my bro was brought up with a strict work ethic and lots of animals! So he is pretty grounded and very well socialised. He went through lots of obedience training (I changed his diapers) and was taught proper bite inhibition early on, so he is acceptable in most public situations.
He has all sorts of arcane distinctions in the academic/philosophy world, but has yet to parlay any of it into a serious income. He gets grants from all sorts of odd places and so far has made a pretty nice tax-free income just for studying things like "What do we really mean when we say "chair"" but he still lives like a grad student at 35. But when I go visit him in Chicago he knows to clear a spot and take the Blue Stuff out of the toilet bowl because I am bringing a dog!

I love him too, but he makes it hard to "reach" him. Dan is 52, gorgous and never married, wants a wife but is clueless. He is so smart, well to do, and lonely. I had to help him change a door knob on one door in his house back in 1990, he could not figure it out, yet his mind works on a level I cannot understand. I feel for him, he's got "it"..but is lacking in all areas we take for granted. I like having less working brain cells, makes me work harder and appreciate more.

I know in the UK banding is illegal and alot of places just do it to save the money from having the dock surgically done. Some breeders even use fishing line. My thoughts are that it would be more painful especially when the pup is over a week old and can feel pain. It would be like me not wanting a toe so i put a band around it and hope it falls off. With what I have read, the bands are put on right after the puppy is born and does not take long for the tail to fall off. I am not sure how old those pups are in the picture, but my glance before it was removed looked as though they were older then 2-3 days. I have been on about 50 sites looking into it and as long as the tail is kept clean then apparently it is safe. I just hope those puppies are very very young and the breeder just isnt trying to save a few bucks.

Tail banding....
Apparently banding the tails is quite accepted practice. There's special tools and techniques and some breeders do it themselves because they can get the correct tails that way. Quite often vets don't know how to do a proper dock, and if the dog is to be shown then it needs a second docking (which is an amputation) at the same time ears are done.
My Dobie friend tells me it is completely painless, clean, and efficient as long as it's done by someone who knows what they're doing, and it's done at the right age, not too young. I'm just repeating what she told me, she sent me some sites and info. Just FIY on banding, not necessarily cruel or just to save money.

From what I was told about banding is basically what Carina said but if done to early can be a health risk ot the pup and personally I think it is cruel. I am not a big fan of docking or cropping but with certain breeds it is better for them healthwise.

My friend says between 7-10 days, and puppies show no signs of discomfort at all. If they were very distressed, the mama dog would be unsettled and upset, but apparently if done properly, this does not happen at all.
Mind you, I'm of the opinion that it's generally unecessary to crop and dock....I wanna tailed Rottweiler one day!
