I wouldn't do it. There is a general rule that people should have one box per cat, plus one extra.

I'd like to add that although that rule is the best of all worlds, many people with 2 cats use only one litter-box. So long as you scoop the poop out each day and change the litter completely each week, you may be okay....(key word here is may)

Given that the cat pooped on the floor though.....for you, this option seems risky and you don't want the cat to get used to pooping on the floor.

If this were my situation, no question, I'd use 2 boxes.

Another general rule for litterboxes is scoop out the poop DAILY and change all the litter WEEKLY.

Hope that helps
Marko

In terms of moving the boxes, that might be okay. Try it.
Litterbox location is also important to cats though and in general they prefer quieter locations.

I think a few of the more important questions are: How old are the cats in question? How long have the boxes been in the spots where they are? How much of a routine have the cats been used to? The older the cat, the longer the boxes have been in that spot, the regiment the cat is used to..... all have a role in moving boxes.
In my case I have 5 cats in the house, 3 boxes. I break all the "rules" because they are all close together. I have not had any issue with them using anything but the boxes unless there has been a diahhrea issue (only once). But my cats are all under 2 years old. Very young and adaptable. If your kitties are older it may be hard for them to adapt to the change. Just my thoughts.

Sounds good, but you'll want to move the box very slowly. If possible, a few inches or a foot a day until it's where you want it. Might be somewhat inconvenient for you for a while, depending on where and how far it has to go, but that method should minimize any problems for your cats.

I have 3 large cats and I use only 2 boxes downstairs, but they are Rubbermaid storage-boxes,so a bit larger than regular litter-boxes.
I know S-C-M is right, but I could not imagine having 4 boxes in the house and my cats are doing fine with 2.
I scoop them a couple of times daily.
If I was the OP,I would keep the 2 boxes, probably in the same place, but they could get used to a different spot.

I have 2 cats and 1 box regular cleaning is the key to their not minding sharing one.

I have gone through many cats and have never had a problem moving boxes I would twice a day just pick up kitty and go to new location..plop in box and gently say " This is your new poopy place so please go here instead ..ok?" and they listen every time
