are laserbeams harmful?

My daughters dog Maggie (a Border collie 2yrs old) was overjoyed and excited when someone would play and flash a laser beam light around the room, or outdoors at night. She would bound after it, to catch it, which was great exercise for her, seeing as they lived in somewhat close quarters. Someone decided that it would be cute to let Maggie carry (and chase) around a lit flashlight by herself. She would occupy herself by doing this, and amuse her owners at the same time. After a few days of this, it was obvious, that Maggie wanted it all the time. She would stand for long periods just staring at one spot, or if she saw a shadow would suddenly lunge at it. The light play was stopped completely, and every time the dog would behave as if she wanted to play with the light, her attention would be re directed. It has been several weeks now, but nothing seems to have deterred her. Maggie will stand and stare in one spot or direction, then do a head lunge at what she perceived as a "spot" or shadow. Iím worried about what damage she is doing to her nose (rug burns) and head by the constant banging?? (My daughter assures me that the laser beam was never shone in her eyes directly, and it is her belief that it was the flashlight (and shadow play) that has made the dog the way she is. Can anyone shed some light on this phenomenon??
